Will that *really* "Buff right Out"?

Got a scuff on the rear driver side fender/wheel well.

Just noticed it this morning.

How can I tell if "That'll buff right out"? '07 WDP TL-S that's been properly cared for (Clayed when new; hand washed regularly, wax/sealant, etc). Never polished though.

Assuming it will Buff right out, exactly how would you do it (step-by-noobie-step)?

TIA.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Thanks for the reminder.

Pics as soon as I can.

Excel has way more knowledge on this then I would ever, but I would recommend some sort of scratch removing compound incorporated with a variable speed polisher. If anything it would significantly reduce the visibility of the scratches. I can’t really recommend Quixx scratch removal yet, it’s still in shipment but I will let you know if it works.

Btw; rule of thumb applies if the scratch can be felt by your finger nail it's probably not going to come out, but it looks like it will come out.

I do have some 3M scratch remover (ScratchX ??) but am reluctant to do anything that might make it worse.

You can definetly feel the scuffed areas - some more than others. I wonder if I've taken the Clear Coat off in some areas.

Maybe I'll try a little of the scratch remover in a small area, polish and wax that. If that goes well, maybe try another small area and work just a little at a time.

Any opions on my "plan"??

what did you bump up against...maybe its paint transfer...i would start out with the scratch x and see what happens...your probably going to need a udm or some kind of machine to get it all out...

Yes, there is paint transfer in a few of the scuffed areas. It's hard to see in the pics, but it is yellow-ish.

Thanks for the suggestion on the UDM/Buffer. I think you're right about needing a machine to get it out - assuming it'll come out at all.

Excellent idea. Im fairly confidant you will be able to remove the majority of that. It appears to be a light, albeit "significant" brush with a bollard type of stationary item (Care to share?!?).
Go with whatever polish you have on hand, report back and let us know how it went. Always reseal after polishing.

....

Thanks for the advice.

As far as the "how" - - it appears someone moved my garage door about an inch to my right as I was backing in.

They have since put it back where it belongs.

I guess the absolute worst case would be to take it to a body shop and get it fixed up like new. I'll save that for a last resort, but hopefully it wouldn't be too expensive.

Now if you had a UDM, you could swap backing plates, andd some sandpaper and buff out that vehicle ya left on the siding!!
On another note, the price paid for the UDM and products is porbably less then taking it to the body chop, i mean shop......And you would have it forever also.....

When you say you can feel them with the TIP of your fingernail does your fingernail go down in them and catch or bump overtop of them?

I've seen the prices on those rebuilds - awesome!! You might get a phone call or a PM in a week or so.

On the "upside" I've got another car going into the body shop shortly. Maybe they can "hook me up" :wink: .

This one WON'T Buff out (Road Debris at Night; ~65 mph. Thought is was part of a tire until I saw this the next morning):

Under the Front:

And Into the Rear Door/Fender:

I'd say "bumps over them", but I can't check to be sure. I think I see where you're going with this though: Everything I can "bump over" is more paint transfer.

Yeah, you're right. Grocery day and I got caught looking out the wrong side. 99% of the time we do just like you say - drive in, back out.

Thanks for the suggestions/support. I'll see if I can make a little progress with the Scratch Remover this evening. If that goes well, I'll work it out this week-end and re-post pics.

i think you are going to be happy with the scratch x by hand, dont forget afterwards to follow with some wax/sealant...i still think a machine is going to be better, but i think with some time and beer you will beable to get it all out...it might take a few hours, but i think it will all come out...post some pics after you get to business...

Before you start withthe ScratchX wet a rag with rubbing alcohol and aggitate the area withit .. it might lift a lot of the paint transfer.

I had a similar issue with my old TSX. It buffed out!

If I remembered correctly, I clayed and used an orange pad with Sonus SFX-1 at the time...I think I followed up with PB SSR1....

Seems as thought your clear just got scuffed. Like others, it should buff out with a medium or light polish

I had something similar on my WDP and I almost died (the area wasnt as large). Before I pulled out the UDM, I tried some megs scratchx with a soft MF and the spot just went away. Good luck...

I think we can claim success!!

Some of you might gag a little at the process, but here's what I did:

- Washed the area with a little Dawn and a MicroFiber. Got a little of the dirt, etc off;

- Clayed the area (and a little over lap). This took most of the surface dirt and little of the "scuff color" off;

- Used the Meg's ScratchX. Made a little more progress, but not much. By this time the area was mostly smooth, but still discolored and had scuff marks;

- Got some 3M Rubbing Compound, a cordless drill and an old polishing pad I use on golf club heads (I know . Sorry .... take a deep breath; no harm, no foul). This got most of the scuffing off, but I was worried about marring the surface with the 3M product and an old pad so I was conservative. This got ALOT of the remaining scuff off.

- Used a little more of the 3M product on a MicroFiber and worked it by hand on the few remaining spots;

- Went over the area with ScratchX by hand in case I had made any surface scratches/swirls;

- "Polished" with some Meg's Cleaner/Wax and MF by hand;

- Waxed with a couple coats of Meg's NXT Synth Wax;

- Spritzed it with some Meg's Quick Detailer and a clean MF.

Voila. fini.

Looks good as far as I can tell - it was getting dark by the time I finished.

Thanks all for advice/support. I was pretty worried.

Hopefully in the bright light of day, it will look as good as it seems to in the pics.

You can see a little dent a few inches up from the Bumper gap in the 2nd pic.

And yes, I've got some of the cleanest, shiniest, best kept golf clubs on the block. I wax my shaft too .... .... .... errr .... graphite, that is.

Patrick, you still might get a call in a couple weeks on one of those rebuilt UDM's - .

^^

CHROME!!!

No, I don't like chrome. Even the so called "Black Chrome" on the TL-S, which is more like "barely smoked chrome". If it were *really* Black Chrome, I'd be OK with it.

It's a long-term goal to eliminate/paint every piece of chrome on the car. Fortunately there's not much; unfortunately it's not my highest priority time or money-wise.

Those are "Black Accents".

And *you* can have the pleasure of removing them AFTER you buy me lunch and a beer (Dos Equis, Shinerbock or Lone Star are acceptable).

Nah, I'm in Charlotte, but travelled to Grand Prairie and Plano pretty frequently until a few years ago.

Born in Texas though
