darrinb is right. This spongelike thingy is curved to match the sidewall bulge.

go to http://www.vikingcarcare.com/products/ and look at the second picture down. That is a excellent product to use to apply tire gel.

Household sponge is king for this application. Do like Bluto says tho & keep them in a ziploc bag.

But you gotta clean off the sponge sometimes....I've go so much buildup on my tire swipe that when I touch it, I have black gook all over it. But perhaps after a several applications, it's time to replace it.
