Touch-up paint

Folks,

I have noticed several chip-offs (around 15-20) on my '05 RL. How would i go about touching it up? (a search on the forum revealed plenty of results, hence, a pointer to the actual thread, if already covered, would be appreciated).

Is it recommended to purchase the paint (lakeshore silver metallic) from Acura dealer or a nearby Pepboys/AdvancedAutoParts etc? What other accesories would i need to do the job myself? How long do touch-ups last generally speaking? Is it worth to get them done professionally? If so, how much should i expect to shell out?

Your help is always appreciated :-)

Here is a URL for a really good paint chip paint -

http://www.drcolorchip.com/
I have used it on our '04 MDX and it is great. Its not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. It comes in a really nice wooden box, there are a few different sized brushes and pads, theirs is a 2 step process, a bottle of paint and another bottle that you wipe over your painted chip to help blend it and make it turn out - in my case really good.
You already know it looks like, that paint chip repair doesnt last forever because its not the same paint, its new paint, and it doesnt bond as well as the original baked on finish, but this is I think about as good as it can get. Perhaps you can try it and if you cant live with it , sometime have the hood/front end repainted, and then put a clear bra on it ? Just dont do this right away because repaints need a little time to dry, since they are probably not baked on like your original paint was.. Good luck DanF

Make sure to clean the chipped area with alcohol/ water so the paint bonds properly.

Dupli-Color from Wally mart (less than $12.00) is better than the Acura paint. Metallic is really very difficult to match and as long as it is the right color code, you should be OK. Dupli-Color also sands down better and doesn't come off with the rag. I use an old credit card wrapped tight in an old white cotton shirt cloth. Then I use Meg's #9 Swirl Remover (Pretty much like the Lanka kit) and rub it with the smooth/ flat end of the card facing down on the blob. (If you have a good amount of compound, you won't scratch it). Usually you can rub down the blob after 5 hours or so and even sooner if the car sits out in the sun.

You gotta realize that this is time consuming work as you have to even out each and every one of the chips (start with the big/dep ones first).

After you even out the paint, apply sealant (Klasse) on the spot and your favorite wax. With regular cleaning , sealing, waxing the touch up should last a long time.

If the stone chips are quite extensive, a good body shop could probably do it for around $500.

The more i read about this, the more i think i am at risk of seriously screwing up the good paint around the chips as well... at a nearby carwash place, i found a guy who, for about $120, touches-up all chip-offs on the car (around 2-4hr job).. i am thinking of using him to see how it turns out..
