Thoughts on a wash mitt.

I was just sitiing on the back patio thinking about things in general , smelling the flowers and picking the lint out of my belly button when my thoughts turned to my wash mitt ( I know ..I'm old and need a life ).

Over the years I have been using OTC sheep skin mitts and had good luck with them but I was going trough 2+ mitts a season.

Between March and October I wash my car at least 3 times a week and last spring or the fall before, Patrick could prolly tell you when from his records, I bought a heavy sheep skin mitt from him and its still going strong.

Do the math thats over 90 washes a seaon and its been a season and then some. In the same time period I have gone through 3 OTC mitts that I use exclusively for the wheels.

My mitts aren't treated special, at the end of the wash they are just thrown over the side of the wash pail and left there to drip dry.

My son has one of the same mitts and tho he doesn't wash as much he is on the second season also.

The mitt I am refering to is this one http://www.prestostore.com/cgi-bin/s...5255&pd=131829 and if the ones we have are a true indication of the quality its an excellent mitt.

Dale

Actually I do nothing to it .. after I wash the last panel I give it a rinse in the wash soap , dump the wash bucket and just hang the mitts on the side of the bucket.

Nothing special ... thats just how good these mitts are. The OTC wheel mitts are treated the same way and I use a couple a season and they wash a lot less area but the wheels are never cruddie .. just light brake dust.

See... and everyone thinks us detailers do all special stuff to our wash mitts when in fact we just treat them like women .. a quick squeeze and put them away wet....

^^lol

I may have to pick up those mitts on my next order. I have the Sheepskin mitt with Interior Glove and it started to rip on me. I was washing the car one day and the part between my thumb and index finger ripped and I felt the rubber (from the interior glove) rub against my paint. I don't wash nearly as much as you and I don't do anything "special" with my glove after use, just fling it across the wash bucket too.

Maybe it just gets worn out after time???

Although its not the one you linked, the mit I got from Pat in my bucket order is the best mit I've used.

i like the looks of the ones in the link....the one i ordered from pat had a rubber glove inside it, and the mitt tore pretty early in the use....i also felt the mitt was too long and hit so far up my fore arm it was hard to wear....

If any of you have had problems with the rubber lined mitt, ship it back for a replacement!

I've had decent luck with my OTC sheepskin (will definitely look into Excel's) mitts.
After last panel, I rinse it in my "rinse" bucket then hose it off. Wring it out and hang it (it's got a little loop where the "cuff" meets the mitt, hangs perfectly on the shelves in my garage and dries quickly.

I use a Griot's Garage microfiber wash pad on the lower panels and around wheel wells, one of Excel's 3M Saf-T-Scrubs on the bumber.
Maybe that's why my OTC mitts are lasting so long.

While were talking about mitts. Does anyone use different materials for different parts of the car? I was thinking 2x sheep for the paint and something more durable for the wheels? What would be more durable?

I found a nice wand at Pep Boys for a couple of bucks. MF and something else. Worked great on some Durango wheels. Like $5.

I wouldn't mind picking up a mini detail brush from George, but I can't justify the price.

Dale!!!

I use the Lake Country Ulti-Mit since it uses the super soft red foam and holds soap suds like crazy.

I have that same one. Curious, did yours start to "shed?" My mitt has started to shed and you can see it left in the wash bucket.

Does anyone know if this one sheds too?? - http://www.prestostore.com/cgi-bin/s...5255&pd=131829

Guys, keep in mind, these are natural products, coming from a natural animal. (Like theres any other kind?!)
There are no two alike. Some may shed, some may not. Pelt and fur density are thicker on the Heavy and Ultra heavy mitts vs. the medium and light grades. In all honesty, your getting what you pay for vs. a grab bag at various other sites.

I don't know if it's natural to sheepskin, but I get the occasional sheep 'hairs' on my car from washing.

OK, expounding on that - it usually comes right off with a rinse. But if you use ONR, should it wipe up with a MF?

The shedding? Certainly, should come/sweep right off. The worst is around emblems.

You guys don't wash your mitts...?

I wash mine after car wash.

By the time I'm through washing my ride, they are black.

I couldn't imagine just rinsing them out would be enough to lift all the left over dirt.
