Post For those thinking about using Zaino...especially in Canada

Hey guys,

I've never used Zaino in the past but after reading all the great things on this website I was interested in trying it out. I live in Ottawa and there isn't anyone in town that I know of that carries this stuff (Canadian Tire sure as hell doesn't).

I also don't know where we Canadians can get our hands of the stuff. So I wrote to Zaino and got an info rich response from Sal Zaino. I thought I'd post it here for the rest of you folks interested in Zaino. The questions I asked him were twofold, as I got paint protector applied I wanted to know if Zaino would be OK to apply since it is a polish and not a wax, I also asked where a frustrated Canadian could get the products.

Here's Sal's response and my questions from the email:

"1) I have a new car that I had paint sealed...is it OK to use your Zaino products on this finish?

No not at all...

In my humble opinion... .... PaintSealants do not work... and can't do what they claim.... All they are, is a glorifiedpolish/wax. Sometimes acrylic based. It doesn't last 3 months, let alone three years. It'sapplied by the dealer or an outside shop.
It costs the dealer about $10.00if they apply it themselves or approx. $60 if farmed out to an outside shop. It'sa great money marker for the dealer and salesmen joke about it all the time.

Theguarantee is useless and hinges on the laws
of average. Don't waste yourmoney. If these systems could ever work they'd be formulated in the paintor applied at the factory..... Total nonsense.

Teflon in a product is alsomarketing hype. Teflon needs heat. Approx 625 degrees to stick to a metalsurface. It can never stick to a paint surface. Another B.S. marketing ploy....

Follow my Applications Tipsand you'll be fine.....

2) I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Where is the best place to order your products from based on where I live?

Thank You for your interest in ZainoBros' Show Car Polish Products. For all Canadian orders. I haveset up an official Canadian distributor of Zaino Bros' Show Car PolishProducts. For your convenience you can order directly from him.

Please read thoroughly. It containssome really great info.....

ZAINO APPLICATION TIPS

1. Because Zaino Show Car Polishis optically perfect (99.9%) The
optimum results are achieved byusing over wax free paint.

2. If you are looking for the ultimatepaint surface preparation. Use Zaino Z-18 ClayBar firstor skip to Step 3.

Zaino Z-18 ClayBay was designedto remove airborne contaminants, paint overspray, water spots, raildust, industrial fallout, diesel fuel & catalytic converter residueand any other bonded surface contaminants from paint. All cars even brandnew factory paint has airborne contaminants... Here's the deal. The non-abrasive Z-18 ClayBar will remove any surface contaminants from thepaint finish and not hurt the clear-coat. The ClayBar will getthat paint finish smooth as glass. Now remember waterspots, bird droppingsand bug guts if left on the paint finish for any length oftime. Will etch into the paint finish.

The ClayBar will also remove anystore bought waxes....

I recommend you use my car wash(Z-7) as a lubricant for the ClayBar. Just make sure to keep the surfacearea lubricated while using the ClayBar. Use 1/2 capful of Z-7 Car Washto 12 ounces of water. I use a spray bottle for the mix. Shake it up and spraythe area to be Clayed. Just make sure to keep the surface area lubricatedwhile using the ClayBar.

3. I would definitely recommendyou remove the wax buildup on your paint. Just use Liquid Dawn(handdishwashing liquid) as a car wash. It has a high alkaline content whichcuts right thru carnauba wax, paraffin, silicone oils, etc. Thiswill get your paint finish squeeky clean and wax free.

I don't advise making a habit ofwashing your car with Dawn. But for this scenario it's fine. High alkalineproducts like Dawn are tough on polishes. It will never harm thepaint finish though. A car wash is made specifically to clean without removingdurable polishes. ALSO, Make sure you remove any water spots, beforeyou apply my products. Because Zaino has no abrasives or harsh solventsit will not remove water spots or stains. Z-18 ClayBar is great forremoving any paint surface contaminants.
Re-wash the entire vehicle withZ-7 Car Wash immediately after the ClayBar Cleaning Process.

4. The basic products you will needare Z-1 or the new ZFX, Z-2, Z-5(optional, but highly recommended for swirls and especiallyon darker colors), Z-6 and Z-7.

If you are going to use the NEWZFX flash cure system, then skip step 5 and read the ZFX instructions below..

5. Start with Z-1 Polish Lok asper directions. Z-1 does not need to dry. Remember do not wipe off theZ-1 Polish Lok. Apply Z-5 or Z-2 directly over the Z-1. Z-5 is theHot ticket for a swirl free, flawless paint finish. Usually one to threecoats will accomplish that.

6. Let Z-5 or Z-2 polish dry atleast one hour. Please NOTE: Zaino Show Car Polish works best at 60 degreesor higher. However, it can be applied down to temperatures of45 degrees. It just will take much, much longer to dry. As much as two tothree hours drying time is required if the temperature is 50 degrees orbelow. Also, If the humidity is high. Longer drying time is necessary.Humidity is a killer on the drying time of Z-2 or Z-5. The moisture inthe air hinders drying time up to four times longer thannormal. Sorry, but I can't help this.

When you try to remove Z-2 or Z-5when it is still wet. All you're
accomplishing is moving it around.Kinda like reapplying it. Also you need to use a LARGE White 100%Bath size towel (please refer to my Tips & Tricks sheet on my web sitefor the proper towels to use) to remove Z-2 or Z-5. Smaller towels willnot work efficiently.

To test if Z-2 or Z-5 is dry andready to be removed. Wipe your finger on a hazed section. It should immediatelycome off and leave a crytal clear finish. If it smears, itis still wet. You can leave Z-2 or Z-5 on for hours or overnight if you desire. When it is not humid Z-2 will take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutesto dry. Depending on how heavy you applied it. I have applied Z-2in the Arizona sun and it dried in approx. 3 to 5 minutes. I havealso applied it in 38 degree temperature and it took about 2 to 3 hoursto dry. Be patient. It's worth it.

Different situations affect dryingtimes. Also, remember you have Z-1 and Z-5 both on the car. That istwo products that have to dry at one time. Takes longer. Z-2 or Z-5does not contain any oils and once it's dry will never ever look smearyor feel greasy. If you remove Z-2 or Z-5 before it is thoroughly dry and get any smears. Just wipe down the car with a damp cotton towel. Thiswill remove any smears. Don't use Z-6 until you wipe the car down. Ifyou'd like call me and I'll help you out with more info!

7. After removal of Zaino Z-2 orZ-5. You should wait 24 hours if the outside temperature is under 70degrees and 6 hours if over 70 degrees, before applying the next coat ofZ-5 or Z-2.

8. Use Z-6 "Gloss Enhancer" sprayas per directions, between each and every coat of Z-5 or Z-2. It reallyhelps give a three dimensional look. It's antistatic properties willreduce dust and dirt pickup by 60%. Z-6 can be used immediately after removingZ-2 or Z-5 or right before applying the next coat of Z-2 orZ-5. Most of my customers prefer to use Z-6 both, before and after Z-2or Z-5 for that extra gloss boost.

9. You can switch to Z-2 as soonas you are happy with the way the paint finish looks. Example, no moreswirls, scratches etc. It's up to you. Z-2 has higher optical propertiesthan Z-5. You can go from Z-2 to Z-5 and then back to Z-2 as often asyou want. Z-2 and Z-5 are 100% compatible and interchangeable. You should always end with Z-2 as the last coat because of its higheroptics.

10. The number of coats of Z-2 orZ-5 is up to you. When you reach the level of enhancement you like, normal maintenence with Z-7 Car Wash and Z-6 "Gloss Enhancer" spray is allthat's necessary. Naturally apply a coat of Z-2 or Z-5 whenever youfeel it is required.

NOTE: One application of Zaino Z-2or Z-5 will outlast anything in the industry and is all you'll everneed for an average vehicle. However, Multiple coats will achieve aneven deeper, wetter-looking, ultra high gloss. Plus higher paint protection. It's up to you....You be the judge...

ALWAYS use only 100% Cotton towels. They must be Made in USA. Brand name (Cannon or Fieldcrest) large whitebath size towels. See my web site, for the real truth on cotton towelsand which ones to use.

Hey...you're in Ottawa too?! I've got a Milano Red/Parchment, which is what I'm assuming you have judging by your avatar. Cool. I haven't seem 1 other one in town! Anyway, I got the paint sealant done too...but from the dealer. They contracted it out to Ziebart. I agree that it probably does zip, but I figured...what the hell. Which dealer did you buy from?...Camco or Casino? Thanks for the info on Zaino.

Thanks for the info, T.

Very useful and I'm glad that getting Zaino gear doesn't look like the headache I thought it was.

Hi there Peter,

Yes I bought red and parchment baby in early January from Camco. I've seen one other red TSX driving around since I purchased mine...maybe it was you? I think it had the spoiler...did you pick one up? I got my paint sealant done at Spartan autocare...just because I got my old '92 talon done there to and the colour looked great 12 years after I bought it.

Based on what I've read I'm gonna give Zaino a go...just not till it warms up a bit

Thanks Soze75,

yeah it looks dead simple to get the products...even have their own Canadian based website that you can order from.

It'll be a while before I order mine though....it's too damn cold out to wax a TSX! :'(

Hey T

I don't have the spoiler...IMO it's pretty damn ugly. But it's good to hear that there are at least three reds in town! How did you find Camco? I found them to be quite good...although very pushy with the paint and rust protection. Others I've talked to hated Camco (preferred to go to Hull), so I'm wondering if anyone else actually liked their experience!

Hi there,

My experience was very good. I had a sales guy named Elijah who was very knowledgable and good to work with. I looked at both the RSX type - S and the TSX before deciding on the TSX. I got just over 2K off sticker without any protracted negotiations so it was an enjoyable experience.

My car does have a few things I need Camco to adjust. I have a whistling/wind noise from the driver window and my steering wheel is a bit off centre. I just havent had the time to go in yet.

How have you found their service dept? I hope they are OK to deal with.

Going in for my first service soon...I've got about 7200 kms on mine. It's the service dept. that I'm worried about...haven't heard good things. I've gotta get them to look at some minor things too (the odd rattle, moving seat, a possible wheel balance problem). I'm looking forward to seeing if the service is any good (and to check out the new TL!)

Look on the bright side, we are halfway through Feb already. Knowing Chicago weather, we will be breaking 50s here in a couple weeks and might even get some 60s/70s and even an 80 within a month
