One thing you should do to prepare your paint before you use the synthetic wax is clay your paint. You can find claybar kits (usually just one claybar and lubricant spray) at the local auto parts store. Some people have even found it at Wal-mart, believe it or not.
I would definitely wash, clay, and then polish before adding a sealant. If you really want a sealant that is far more reflective (shiny) and lasts much longer than nxt or mothers....check out klasse . If you need directions on how to detail your car, then check out the perfect shine process . Good luck!!

I would feel more comfortable using at a minimum, a paint cleaner to provide sterility to the surface. I would really prefer a light grade polish to get the surface prepped. Just my preference.
Clay will more then likely remove any existing protectant, but if your in a pinch for time, clay it, seal it. you'll be fine. Call Mothers 800 # and see if Reflections has any cleaners in it ?
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR TIPS
Just finished claying my car. I used the cellephane trick to check for surface contaminants before and during the clay job. It is an unbelievably solid bit of advice. I am amazed how the fingertips are sensitized with the cellephane.
I applied Mothers Reflections. Is it a good idea to apply carnuba on top of this?
Will that enhance the shine?

My prescription for a new car with very little marring is:
Clay if needed (Perform the baggie test if unsure)
Use Menzerna FPII (Final Polish II) either by hand or with a DA polisher. This will ensure the paint is cleaned and also level down any fine or light scratches.
Seal your new paint with the wax or polymer of your choice
