smelly vent air
I just bought my '97 3.0 last weekend from a dealer and I'm very pleased with the car except for the stinky air coming from the vents. I didn't notice it when buying the car. It's sort of subtle, but after a while it's kinda gross. At first I thought it was because the previous owner was a smoker. But the interior dont stink and I can't figure how fresh air coming in would stink. I'm wondering if it's left over from when they steam cleaned the engine? It's almost got a perfumey smell too. The smell reminds me of my grandma. This isn't a good thing. My question, other than WTF?!, has anyone bought a smoker's car and had this same problem? If so, how'd you get rid of it. Any thoughts would be appreciated. It's starting to kill the 'new car buzz'....

ARE you sure it isn't mold or mildew?
They have a cleaner that can be used to remove the gunk and filth that gets into the vent and A/C system.
The dealers have caught on.
You should consult with someone to see if you smell mildew or mold. It is a strange sour smell, can also be a musty smell.

Wusssup Seattle?! What dealer did you buy your ride from?! Sounds (smells) like you've got mildew issues like previously stated. I'd run the heat on high for about 10-15 minutes with all windows down. See what happens. If nothing, take it in to the dealer and tell them that it's unexceptable and they need to take care of the smell.

Note about the mildew/mold in the air conditioning/vent system.
This is not that uncommon!
That is why there is a guy out there who is making a ton of money selling these kits that use a foam that gets injected into heat exchanger fins and other little nooks inside the vent/air conditioning system.
Once that stuff gets in the car's system, you can get rid of a tiny bit of the smell by running the heat, etc -- but YOU ARE NOT going to get rid of the crap that is in there.
