Review: Bug & Tar Remover by Turtle Wax

Since it's summer and more bugs are out, there's been a lot more bug splatter on the front of my black TSX. I picked up this product OTC for < $4 if I remember correctly. When sprayed onto your vehicle, it comes out as a white foam, similar to carpet cleaner. It is suppose to soak into the the bug mess and soften it up, but it does not. It works fine with minor bug guts, but that's about it (if that makes any sense). Anything that's been smashed on at over 65 MPH it won't really do much good on... which pretty much means everything. Like any other product, it works wonders if you put a lot of elbow grease into into, but then again, so does soap and water. Who wants to go to town on a black finish with a MF towel? You'll inevitably end up with micro scratches. I think the purpose of these products is to remove guts with as little rubbing as possible and this product fails to meet even a fraction of that statement.

In short. Save your money.

Soap and water, cover area with a MF and keep wet for 5-10 minutes (a beer usually comes in good at this point). Best I have found.....

Tarminator is my first choice if a standard wash can't do the trick.

The Bug & Tar remover I have (by turtle wax) comes in a liquid that you apply on a cloth and lightly rub on the spot you need to remove stuff from. It works pretty well with a few light passes. Maybe the spray isn't as strong?

I like to spray a generous amount of Meguiar's Quick Detailer on, and let it soak for a while. Then wipe gently, spray again, then final wipe.

I have an old fleece type blanket for a single bed that I tore in 1/2 top to bottom. When I'm detailing a car with lots of bugs I wet the front of the car and lay the blanket on it and hose the blanket down and tuck it in all the nooks abd crannys. Then I go about detailing / vac the interior .. once done the bugs are usually fairly soft.

If they are a little persistant I then use a used wetted Bounce sheet to go at them.

I'm not sold on the Turtle Wax bug remover .. I used it pretty regular on a Jag and another car I do often, both lease cars at the end of thier leases .. fortunatly ) and both showed clear failure in the frontal area. No proof but makes me nervious.
