remove sticky adhesive residue

just got my first new car recently (acura rdx) and there is sticky residue from what looks like adhesive from stickers that were on the car's hood and rooftop. the guy at the car wash said to use compound, whatever that is. anyone have a recommendation for what i should buy and how to use it?

can i just use that orange "goof off" stuff that removes stains and sticky stuff from windows and metal or will it ruin the exterior finish on my car?

tia

You have to be careful with that type of remover. Some of it will dissolve plastic and remove paint if left unattended. If you have WD-40, thats totally safe to use.

What about gum? I saw what looked to be gum on may car and tried to get most of it off with terry rag and water (all I had at the time) and it seemed to just spread it out and is still there.
