Exclamation Re: Carbon Fiber Hood

I need some help from my trusted Acurazine buddies.

Please take a look at these pics.

I bought this hood confident that I could repair this surface.

How would you clean and restore this?

Is this something that I could easily mess up...just take it to a detailer to fix?

And for the record...I don't know what it is but feels like it is only on the surface.

Thank you all in advance.

Can you scratch it off with your fingernail? Trying to determine if its "on" the paint, or "in" the paint....... My first thought was a chemical burn of some sort.

Well...doesn't look like it scratches off but I was able to put scratch marks in it from my fingernail.

I just took some quick detailer and tried cleaning it off good.

The marks have no texture to them....as to say when I run my hand over it I can't feel any texture.

What about buffing it out? Like with the UDM?

The guy who sold it to me said it needed a good buffing but it came with his car when he bought it and never put it on the car.

I think that's the best pics I can get of those marks.

Don't know how I could improve on them.

Just took these.

I just noticed that those blemishes or whatever reappear on some of the edges....not all

That is giving me some hope that I can buff it out...don't ask my why!

I'm being optimistic!

Ok...is paint cleaner safe for this hood?

I guess it doesn't matter because it has a clear coat on it.

What kind of paint cleaner would I use if you don't mind.

Would you try paint cleaner first then polish?

Or vice versa?

Yeah, you can actually pick up a Meguiar's Paint Cleaner locally. You might want to try that out first with a MF towel.

Are there any words of caution when using paint cleaner.

Like do's and don'ts?

paint cleaner works like a polish, with the exception that it uses chemicals and not abrasives....rub it in with a microfibre and buff off with a microfibre....

i dont know why everyone thinks clay is the answer to everything...clay is not a magic tool...it simply shears off small embeded particals in your paint...not damage....

Good info.

So...steps would be?

1) Paint cleaner.

2) Polish with UDM

Anything else?

Yeah I thought about that but I don't want it painted.

That defeats the purpose of getting a carbon fiber hood...IMO

I thought that if I was able to fix this I would just get it clearcoated anyways since it might need it.

i would say the main reason to having the carbon fibre hood or any parts is weight savings over steel body panels....but if its looks for you, get it re clearcoated....

Paint cleaners are very easy to use and designed for situations just like this. Just dab some on a foam app or microfiber, and use a lineal motion until it dissapears. The advantage of using the cleaner vs. the polish is the cleaner normally doesnt contain abrasives.

Yeah normally people would buy it for performance but I love the look of carbon fiber.

I'm not racing or anything but love the tuner look so to buy carbon fiber and paint over it is not something I would be into and def. a last resort.

Cool. Thanks Patrick.

I'm going to head down to Kragen and see if they have any paint cleaner.

Is that where I would find this product? A Kragen or Pep Boys Automotive Store?

Well...I went to Kragen and nobody had any idea of what I was talking about...umm...what else is new.

Maybe it's just the location by where I live.

Anyways...the only thing I found that looked/sounded remotely close was this Blue Magic TR-3 Resin Glaze.

Here is a link to the product.

http://bluemagicusa.com/index.php/bl...ic/products/91

Will this work for my application?

It states that it restores oxidized finishes.

1) Apply with a soft cloth to surface turning cloth often.
2) Rub into hood until finish is clean and glaze begins to appear.
3) Allow to dry.
4) Wipe off with fresh cloth

It does caution that there are additional instructions with silver metallic paints...which I don't think I need to worry about.

What are your guy's opinions or thoughts?

TR3 contains enough mineral spirits and distillates to qualify as a cleaner! Its just a PITA to work with.........but being as they are small areas (?) you should be ok. NAPA nad Kragen people are not very detail oriented. Look for Megs Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner or Mothers Pre-Wax Cleaner........They will have one or the other....

OK. Thanks Patrick.

Do you think I should go visit another Kragen and look for those products and return this one?

I found a shop in downtown that carries this stuff.

GROW Wax & Grease Remover.

http://www.spaceagepaint.com/product...d_product=5369

He said it could be used a paint cleaner but would obviously strip all the wax.

Is that a better route?

If it doesn't work...next option.

I went out and bought the Meguiars Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner at another location.

I'll give that a shot first and see what happens.

Ha ha...I know...I need to go for a run or something to get all this energy out.

Too bad it's raining...so I'm stuck with the hood!

Just me and the hood.

I'm going to sit down here in a bit and try to clean it by hand with the paint cleaner.

I would totally come down in a heart beat but I can't install the hood by myself.

And doesn't fit in my trunk...

Small detail...working on that.

Ha ha...

Well...much to my disappointment.

The Meguiars Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner did a wonderful job cleaning up the hood but not those problem areas.
