pic of bad detail job

Not the best pic but you can kinda see the lines from basically what is the edge of the buffer from when they went back and forth. Had a thread about this bit it's gone. Anyone compound there car. If so what did you use? just have some number 7 rubbing compound.

Whos responsible for that? Its not like the end of the world though, your mystery can be solved with some guidance and probably a PC. As for that #7 (ARe you referring to the tin can No.7 or Megs #7?)

i remember when i asked what a PC was for the first time as well...and it was exceldetail that i was asking! hehehe

PC = porter cable random orbital buffer (typically model #7424)

think of the difference (and quality of results) between polishing by hand and polishing w/ the PC like driving a 1990 automatic civic and then jumping in a new TL 6spd.

PC=high speed polisher, would have understood that. PC better than the dewalt? I have a 10 buffing wheel but i don't think it works like these do. That thing i think more or less just shakes instead of totally spinning around. The wheel spins if its not on the car but if you put it on the car it doesn't spin and just shakes, good for waxing. So im guessing i should invest in a "PC". won't the polisher leave swirl marks if you use compound with it?? I could have swore thats what my buddies dad did to his truck with compound and a polisher. looked like a brillo pad attacked his truck. i dunno.

Good link btw.

it depends what combo pad and polish you use. for light swirls you can get away with a less aggressive pad and a forgiving polish like Optimum Polish or Optimum Compound. that typically finishes down perfectly w/out any buffer induced marring. if you use a light cutting pad (like an LC orange pad) you usually have to follow that with a lighter pad to clear up the light marring from the more aggressive step.

So going back to the original post: What exactly would be needed to get that out? I just got my car back from the body shop and it looks like that when in the sun? Will a good wash get it out? Or claying/ waxing?

You would probaly need a PC along with some pads (light cut, polishing, finishing), a backing plate (hook & loop), and an abrasive polish. Here are a few threads that are related to the PC.

If you get a Porter Cable 7424 or similar machine,

I would look at properautocare.com, Classic Motoring accessories, I believe, they sell they machine and the best foam pads, made by Lake Country. For removing light swirls, scratches, I have used their yellow foam pad with Zaino ZPC Fusion Swirl remover and had excellent results, on my kid's very abused scratched, black SUV's. I got all the marks out and the end result was almost perfect clear black paint that you could read newsprint on if you held a paper next to the body. Note that this ZPC product is only a cleaner, you will need to add a protecting coat of something on the vehicle after you get rid of the swirls.. If you choose to use the other Zaino products, their Z2 and/or Z5 polish, you will have then put on one of the best, longest lasting acrylic polishes out there. It will look fabulous and last a long, long time before you have to do it again. There is alot more to do with this line of products, and there must be a sticky associated with it if you search. Good luck, as has been said, do not, repeat, do not use a Dupont Rubbing compound No 7 on your paint, unless you want to go through a huge amount of work and introduce alot more scratches into the finish.. Ok, short and sweet. A Porter Cable 7424/7336 sp. A light abrasive polish, something along the line of Four Star Light cut compound, or optimum Compound. Both are very ligh abrasive polsihes, even though they are called "compounds". I would recommend a LC ExcelErasure, White and Orange, then a green to finish up with. i would also recommend using Four Star Ultimate Paint Protectant as a base sealant, followed up with Duragloss AquaWax after washes, and Four Star Ultimate Paint Protectant once monthly to add/build to the base protection.
PC runs about $100.00 at Lowes
Pads, 3x$10.00.
Upp, $22.00/UPPS $15.00
Polishes, Optimum, $16.00 32 oz./ Four Star Body Shop $15.00 16oz.
Your back at perfection for under $200.00, and you have enough to maintain your car for at least 3 years if applied quarterly. About $5.00 a month, less then most newspaper subscriptions...

Removing light halo's like that is actually fairly easy; follow exceldetails recommendations and you'll be all set.
