Paint Cleaner vs. Liquid Polishing Compound

For any seasoned folks in detailing... do you recommend one over the other? The description reads on both products saying they remove light scratches and swirl marks.

The most I have ever done to my car is wash, compound and wax. I have recently picked up some Meguier's Polish, so I'll add that into my regimen(between compounding and waxing). I have a white 2001 CL-S by the way.

Meguirs makes a 3 step system- paint cleaner to remove oxidation and bring out the color- then a swirl remover- then polish- then a final wax of your choice

Yeah I saw that system in the store and was going to go with it until I read the back of the Paint Cleaner and compared it to the back of the compound that I already have. Would it be safe to use the compound in place of the cleaner? do they garner the same results?

Paint cleaners are chemical in nature and used to remove oxidation as well as provide gloss and reflectivity. Polishes contain abrasives and used for paint correction i.e. removing swirls, waterspots, light scratches etc. as well as increase gloss and reflectivity. The choice between a cleanser and a polish depends on the condition of your paint. For more info, read this article from Autopia and will provide the necessary answers.
