Its manufactured by Porter Cable, that much we know......The UDM-PC is still claiming 20% increase in power vs. conventional orbital polishers. (Thats just what the UDM claimed as well) I dont know all the secrets guys. Im assuming a more competitive price soon as well.....

I thought the internals of the original were manufactured by PC and the only difference was the motor and housing since the UDM motor was bigger. Is the UDM-2 an upgrade of UDM-1 or is it a completely unrelated unit thats a new model from PC?

i just got word from lynn phillips at udm, and she says they have switched their manufacture to pc....this tells me that the original machine is just too prone to failure and now they are just going to be selling a pc with the name udm on it....i have seen pics of it already, and its totally a pc...i have emailed her to let her know that if there is concern for my machine failing then i want to trade it in on a pc....i hate to be like this, but they are sending a pretty strong message by giving in to the only real competition they had.....

R & D is certainly expensive in todays world of manufacturing, maybe more so then he imagined, thus another private label......
Also, your one year warranty still applies with your UDM in case you were wondering......As far as I know, that is also offered with the new labeled UDM, which is not available through other offerings i.e. Ebay, Coastal Tool etc.....

excel, no doubt that the udm is a fine machine, i know i love mine, i am just concerned that while my machine is working perfect, i only plan on using it about 4-6 times a year, which isnt much...if it breaks down after the first year and i havent used it that much then vinnie is going to be angry....but hey, i am happy to date so i will continue to use it....

It would've been nice if they could've had PC manufacture the UDM-2. What I mean is incorporate the UDM improvements (torque, speed control, improved ergonmics, etc) into the existing PC.
Kind of a PC+ labeled as UDM.

yea, right now it just looks like a pc with udm sticker on it, but who knows, maybe they have a totally new machine in the works just manufactured by pc...but them my guess would be a new pc that looks just like the udm that pc just made for them...so either way, its now just going to be a pc....no??

Well I have 2 failed UDMs and a working one plus a PC so if the last UDM fails under warrany what do I get as a replacement? A PC? The 2 that failed were both brush issues and one speed switch.
I just wish they would sell replacement parts for them ... to change brushes and the switch isn't brain surgery... One Phillips screw driver and a pair of needle nose pliers.
Too bad they wouldn't allow you to send back a failed one and use the $$ towards a Flex .. But I think with a flex isn't there issues with adapting a backing plate so we can use most the pads we have that are just under 6"?

Dale, a little clarification:
PC models 7424/7336 come shipped (from other then me or Perfect Shine) with a rigid backing plate and with a white polishing pad (non removable). At last check, it was $130.00 shipped to me.
I couldnt even find the warranty for it. But its more then likely 1 year parts and labor. You ship it back, they fix it, they return it.
The UDM by Porter Cable ($149.99) comes with a 1 year REPLACEMENT warranty. A flexible backing plate, and reusable polishing pad. And customer support from those who use them, 24/7. Piece of mind for those who care.
