Latest detail:08 Ashton Martin DB9

I had the pleasure of working on this 08 Ashton Martin with 4800 miles on it. As you can see the passenger door was repainted after someone backed into it and the paint does not match at all Doh! Anyway I was supposed to have this car for 2 days while the owner was out of town on a business trip and halfway into the detail I got a call that the owner was back in town and needed the car by the end of the day. Argh! Well that threw a crimp into my plan and I was only able to achieve about 90-95% correction overall which I was not very happy about but that’s the way the ball bounces sometimes. Ok, on with my process: washed with my Foam gun and two 5 gal buckets using DP Xtreme Foam Formula followed by Pinnacle Ultra Poly clay with Adams detail spray as lube. After taping off all the trim and covering the convertible top I began polishing with my Flex XC3401 and Menzerna SIP on a Score 6.5” yellow cutting pad. I would have preferred to step up to Menz Power Gloss Compound as this clear was pretty hard but I did not have the time to follow that up with a finishing polish so SIP it was, which finished down LSP ready. After an IPA wipe down I applied one coat of DWG and topped it with Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint sealant. I wanted to try Ultima PGP with the DWG but it was dark out and it’s just too hard to see where the UPGP was applied in good lighting let alone poor lighting. Wheels wells were cleaned with APC and a long handle wheel brush and then treated with Griots Undercarriage spray. Tires were treated with Ultima Tire and Trim Guard Plus and the wheels were washed and topped with DP wheel glaze. The engine was pretty clean so it was simply wiped down with Adams detail spray and then followed with Ultima Tire and trim guard plus on the hoses and rubber parts. The interior was vacuumed and treated with Ultima Interior shampoo gel and sealed with Ultima Interior Guard Plus. Ok on with the pics:

nice job how long did the entire process take you? I am left wondering why that 08 had so many swirls on it already.

Not much to wonder, most* rich people don’t know how to take care of their cars, but I know what you mean looks a little over excessive.

I spent about 10 hours total. The wheels were a mess and took alot of time and I was not in a hurry because I thought I had another whole day for the engine, interior and other finishing touches so at that point I was not able to polish it as good as I would have liked.

If you can believe it when I saw the car last it was covered in Halograms and buffer trails and swirled much worse than when I got it. I have not spoken to the owner yet but I am assuming he took it back to the guy who put the halograms in it and had him fix that? only speculation though at this point. Then my guess is that it was taken through an automatic car wash which put the swirls right back in NEVER TAKE A BLACK CAR THROUGH AN AUTOMATIC CAR WASH unless its touchless.

Great job .... doesn't it just make ya cry when ya get them abused like that .. My daughter brought her 96 Ferarri over the day after she got it for me to do and it looked like that and it had 12,000 miles on it .. Previous owner was a pro hockey goalie and didn't care.

Is the stereo a JVC mini?

the swirls in those pictures, would you classify those as heavy swirls. or did you just use the yellow pad to speed up the process.

The swirls for the most part were pretty light however some were heavy and the clear was much harder than I expected. I started out with Menzerna Nano polish with a white LC CCS pad. That cleared up maybe 70% of the swirls so I jumped up to Menz Super Intensive Polish on white. Removed about 80% of the swirls, jumped again to SIP and a score 6.5" yellow pad. This was the first time I used the score brand pad. It doesn't seem as aggressive as the LC yellow. This combo resulted in cleaning up approx 90-95% of the scratches and left no micromarring. At this time I was informed that my time was cut in half and I had to settle for 90-95% correction. My next step would have been to jump to Menz Power Gloss compound and follow that up with the Nano Polish.

thanks for they reply, so for a general rule of thumb you should increase the aggressiveness of the pad before the aggressiveness of the polish.

That may work. You'll discover the more experience that you get you find it easier to know which combinations you're going to need. I have alot of pads so I will usually try a more aggressive pad before going to a more aggressive polish. Then again sometimes I just know that I'm gonna need to start with a compounding polish and then finish it up with a finishing polish. I always recommend starting with the least aggressive combo and work your way up from there. Sometimes you may simply have to work the pad/polish combo a second time on the same area to get the desired result instead of moving to a more aggressive polish or pad. It boils down to patience. If you do not have patience you will get burned out very quickly! This is not a speed game! Take your time and do things right and you will get the desired result!

Well if anyone is in the market for this car the owner is bored with it already and I believe is looking to sell it. Not sure if he is going to fix the door or not? LOL!

Yes I was ill-advised it is the Vantage. He has a DB9 on order which is where the confusion came in. I was told this one was the DB9 but later realized that this was a Vantage? Live and Learn
