From what I understand it was a brush issue and the on off switch ..

I changed the switch on mine and so far no brush issue but from what I heard they were warrantied very quickly.

You'll prolly find out more doing some reading here;

I bought one recently, and am not worried about it because of what I have heard of their customer service. Every product has some bad eggs.

does anyone have a direct comparison between the udm and pc...or is this a nobrainer that the udm is a much better machine...

there are some videos on youtube that show the udm shorting out and making some really bad noises...must have been the main issue with the early machines...mainly the issues i was asking about....

i am planning on getting one from excel, i just want to make sure i am getting the best machine out there....

I have both .. the UDM is more powerful and can do more in less time .

If your doing your car only and thats it a PC will do just fine.

Now .. with the refurbished ones for $99 that changes the equasion.. I'd buy the UDM for $99.

I got the UDM because I do a lot more than my own car and it has helped there.

If you don't want to go refurbished and are doing just your car .. go PC.

one was showing the switch acting up and another was showing the machine just flat out dying. don't get me wrong, I have full confidence in the product, but I would like to know if a lot of these are really faulty or if this problem is just being blown up on the internet.

I've had my PC for a couple of years now and if the UDM was available at the time, I most certainly would have purchased one. The early production models did have problems with the switches and the brushes as Patrick alluded to awhile back. And as Jess pointed out, many of the issues were aired on the UDM thread at Autopia. The product support and warranties for these machines have been outstanding and you'll find very little complaints about the customer service.

I did an Amazon search and came up with onr for $99 at a subsiduary of Palm Beach Motoring Accessories and I'll be damned if I can find it on thier site.

Which seems to be the AutoGeek store and they don't state if new or refurbished.

If you look at failure rates- its always a small percentage of things get made with some part that craps out. From what I read and according to our Guru here, there were some bad brushes or similar that were dead on arrival to the customer or went out soon after, With UDM 1 year warranty- customers got replacements and the units were sent back and the defect parts replaced-
then sold as refurbished. Mine came as brand new never used condition refurb and it still has a 1 year warranty!
Patrick gets first dibs at the refurbs when available for sale, because he is a distributor for them.

It's part of their "moving" sale, but you're right they don't say if the units are new or refurbished.

the seller has good feedback, and amazon is pretty reliable, so do you think its safe to buy from them?

Well think of this ... Exceldetail is a sponsor of this fine forum and he has the refurbished at $99 and refurbished too comes with a 1year warranty and only DOA ones were refurbished so if it was me buying I'd buy from Excel.

If I didn't have one now I'd buy refurbished from him.

Yo answer your question .. yes ..

I love mine. Got it for xmas. Did my car once and my fathers. Removed ALL of the swirls/scratches and was very easy to use. Plan on doing mine again when it gets a lil warmer.
