How often to polish?

Just wondering how often it is to safely polish your car with a PC? My understanding is that each time you polish, you are taking off a tiny layer of clearcoat, so is there a limit as to how often you can do it? Also, because a tiny layer of clearcoat is removed, isn't the overall paint protection diminished with each polish? I guess I am just wondering if 10 years down the road, while the paint maybe swirl free and look good, it is half the thickness of when new.

I only do it when it needs it, when I see defects on the paint. Every 4-6 months or so I will clay and re-wax the car, usually I go by how much water beads on the car.

Usually a couple times a year is suffice (for a light polish, not serious compounding). Yes, its true, you are removing a very minute amount of clear, but normally not enough to suffer any consequences down the road. Using a PC removes far less then a rotary would as well. Keep it protected with a sealant 24/7, use spray waxes monthly, and keep your washing techniques in order and you will end up having to polish less then a couple times a year even. Another alternative is to use a paint cleaner every other time with the PC. This will help brighten the paint with no abrasives.

I do a full detail on the car's about once a year, that includes polishing. Use proper techniques and you won't need to polish at all!
