Holy bug swarm!!
Never ran into anything like it. Cars were on the side of the highway because they ran out of wiper fluid and couldn't see out the windshield. I had a full reservoir and used that up. Had to stop and pull my reserve out of the trunk. I used that up and had to stop 30 miles short of home to buy more. The gas station was filled with cars and semis cleaning their windshields and headlights.
Don't know what these were, looked like winged ants and gave off a strange smell in the car. Everyone at the gas station commented on the smell.
I literally couldn't go more than 1/2 mile without running the wipers/fluid. It was insane!!
Hwy 2 between Williston, ND and Minot, ND after sunset...

Have fun getting those out of the lower grills if you have mesh
I'd put the sprinkler on the car for an hour or so to soften .. or w a wet blanket .. don't leave them on too long they can be acidic.

I drizzled some Zaino car wash concentrate on them last night and got up this morning and finished them off. It was gross....they were everywhere....

Yeah, that's a lot! Reminds me of something we get here in Florida twice a year, for 3-4 weeks. Love bugs! Very acidic, and can eat through your paint, if not removed within a few days! Our "love bug" season is just ending now. Thank God! Let us know if you figure out what big it was!

It was mayflies...Apparently I lucked out to be traveling on the one night after they transformed to adult stage. They only live one day in the adult, terrestrial stage....

Several years ago my car looked just like yours. Bugs everywhere that I couldn't see the paint. 90% came off with Poorboy's Bug Squash. Remaining 10% came off after a second application.

Funny you mention that... There was a dude on a very nice Harley that was behind me when I left Williston (it was still daylight, a little after 9 pm CDT). He was going about 1/2 mph slower than me and he slowly dropped about 1/3-1/2 mile behind me. The bugs started coming out as the sun set and the next thing I know, the guy is no where to be found. Pretty sure he had to pull over. I have no idea how he would have been able to continue. (No helmet, no windscreen).

Speaking of bugs, is this guy nuts or will Superclean work fine and not hurt the finish as long as you wet it down first?

Well I wouldn't use it .. unless your in a cool shaded area because it WILL dry on the paint and if you keep rewetting it it dilutes it ... second off .. any detailer that scrubs with a brush like that looses all credibility with me.
There is a lot safer ways and initially you may not see damage but down the road the clear coat may start to show issues.

You might not be able to get everything off the first time around. Also try luke warm water in a spray bottle with some car wash soap and mist or spray just the hood portion at first wiping with a microfiber cloth. Then move to the one portion of the bumper than to the other side.
Note: Do this in the shade and keep the water in the bottle at washing dishes warm temp.

In addition, I think he mentioned that Superclean is a cleaner/degreaser. Anytime you are applying a degreaser to paint, personally, I would wax that area again.
