Got the New UDM a couple days ago.
Compared to the PC it outshines it ( no pun ) in a couple of areas ..
a) Less vibration
b) Harder to bog down especially doing vertical panels and using one side of the pad.
c) On/off switch easier to use.
d) Orbital mechanism is far superior ..
e) Speed control wheel is better calibrated
f) Higher amp rating thus more power.
g) Will accomplish 80% of what a rotary will do without the risk ..
Well worth the few extrra $$ if your doing this a lot or your in the market.

is it worth it to upgrade if you have the 7424 with flexible backing plate and pads?

a) if you already have a 7424
b) if its still in good working order
c) if you don't do a lot of cars.

I think it's worth upgrading for the reasons given by Jess. The spindle spec, I believe is 5/16"-24, same as the PC which enables you to use a 6" BP. I'm pretty sure Patrick swapped out the 5" BP to a 6" BP. As far as pads, you should be able to use those designed for a dual action machine including the pads you currently have and probably achieve better results.

The thread is the same ... the BP I recieved on mine measures 4 3/4" .. my current one is 5" .. I did find the 4 3/4" with a 6" pad left too much overhang and made it hard to apply edge pressure polishing out scratches but easier to get into small curved spaces.
I swapped it out to the 5" ... were we supposed to get a 6" ?

I never did like using a 5" BP/5.5" pad. I always thought the 6.5" pad accomplished the same task with a 6" BP. (Which i did swap out on my UDM) I prefer using the 6.5" pad/6" BP.
The machine has plenty of power to drive a 6.5" pad for sure.
1. If you have issues with your cars appearance that you have not been able to resolve with the 7424/7336, then the UDM would certainly be worth trying out.
2. If your only going to use it a couple times a year anyway, save you self some cash and stick with the 7424.
3. If your a firm believer that "bigger is badder/better" then get one! Its like having a 7424 that goes all the way to 10! I will have to check back inb on the trade in program also.
