First detail in the bag

Hi Folks,

Took advantage of the nice weather today to give the car its first detail. The car was picked up by our salesman from a dealership 25 miles away, and I requested that he not have it detailed. This meant that I got to tackle the plastic film residue, which was a bit of a pain in the neck. Here were my steps & products:

1. Windows.
Stoner's Invisible Glass, plus utility knife & Goo Gone to remove stickers from driver's side windows.

2. Interior.
Quick vacuum and QD/microfiber on the dash, door panels, etc.

1. Wheels & tires.
Four Star Ultimate wheel gel to remove brake dust, the blue dots, and just to get the wheels looking good. Aero 303 cleaner on the tires to remove the red & white dots. Also used it to clean the wheel wells.

2. Wash.
Typical - Four Star shampoo w/ sheepskin mitt & two buckets.

3. Plastic film removal.
The most time consuming - the residue was just everywhere. 3M wax remover w/ MF towel, followed immediately by QD & MF towel.

4. Polish.
Two stages - whoever removed the film during PDI obviously did it in a hurry. There were a number of swirls in the hood, trunk, and front fenders. I used Menzerna IP with a light-cut pad on the PC @ speed 4. Bada boom. Followed up with Poorboys Professional Polish by hand.

5. Wax.
Poorboys Natty's Blue applied by hand.

6. Wheels & tires.
Poorboys Bold n Bright on the tires - light coat applied w/ Adam's detailing sponge. Poorboys wheel sealant on the wheels. Should make brake dust removal up front quite easy for a while.

7. Exhaust tips.
Master Formula metal polish - I was curious to see if it would have an effect. It cleaned up some baked in grime, but didn't really add much shine.

Here are some pics...

If Mother Nature cooperates, I'll apply a second coat of wax and wheel sealant tomorrow morning. I'm really loving the finish on the car, and have a few other topcoats I'd like to try.

Hey Vroom, I like the breakdown showing process and product. Excellent choices! What do you normally use as a metal polish? And do you usually apply PB Pro Polish by hand? I apply using a polishing pad, remove with MF bonnet and hand buffing with a MF towel.

Thanks!

I've got a couple of metal polishes (Adam's stages 1 & 2 and good ol' Mothers) and will soon be adding Clearkote. Master Formula is the harshest stuff I've got, and I used it to see if I could get some more lustre out of the tips.

With Professional Polish (as with Four Star UPC, which seems to be quite similar) I generally do go with the PC and a buffing pad. It really is a terrific product that seems to bring out the last little bit of pop in the finish before applying topcoat. In this case, I was just sort of cruising along. I wanted to go over the spots I hit with IP, and it was also an excuse to make sure I'd gotten every bit of plastic/adhesive residue, so applying by hand was the way to go.
