Factory orange peel, do you do anything about it?

I noticed today some serious orange peel on my trunk lid, and then looked closer and the whole car has it, but not as bad.

Do polishes and compounds get rid of this? Is it worth getting rid of? Is a buffer needed to get rid of it (I don't have one)? I'm trying to determine if I need to worry about this before getting my clear bra put on, which is scheduled for Friday.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Can you explain what you mean? Orange peel? A new term in my book.

Someone more experienced than I should probably answer, but if you look at the paint in the right light, it's not smooth like glass, it actually looks like an orange peel, i.e. hill and valleys across the surface.

Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_peel_(paint) and this link http://www.sherwin-automotive.com/re...peel/index.cfm.

Orange peel can be mostly taken out by wetsanding with 1800. Costs some $$ and takes a bit of work. Find someone that knows what they're doing or you'll ruin the finish. As I recall, it is in the clearcoat finish. Most people say screw it. Look at a ferrari, high end porsche or bently closely - they wetsand them before shipping (then keep stepping down - cut compounds, polish and protect).

Expect to pay 1k for this and no, they won't get you in and done by Friday - at least not anyone that knows what they're doing.

The images you reference refer to severe, improper spray type orange peel. frequently, people use orange peel to refer to more subtle changes in teh texture of the paint surface that create a smoother but not mirror like reflection - quarter sized areas before a break.

It should be eliminated after the final shooting of clear coat by wet sanding the paint film surface, and polishing with an abrasive polish and a high-speed rotary polisher. It can be removed by wet-sanding (colour sanding) by an experienced detailer . . .
A number of members have noticed orange peel on their TLs. You may want to ask your dealer what can be done or what options are available. Here's some addtiional threads about orange peel . . .
