What brand of protectant do you guys recommend for the dash? I bought a dash mat but I returned it because it looked gay.

Swifties are the static wipes which are available in any regular grocery store. They don't really clean, they pick up dirt and dust on the dash and other areas. They come in different sizes and have different names from many manufacturers.

I got one of the little Cali Dash Dusters at Wal-Mart or someplace for $10. It's great and really picks up the dust & surface dirt well. Easy, fast upkeep between serious cleanings. When I take the time to vacuum out the interior, I use just a washcloth and really hot water to clean, then wipe dry & hit with a coat of Vinylex (Lexol for vinyl dashboards).

Griot's has an anti static mitt for the interior that is great for dusting the dash. Ask for a catalog or check out the site. The static charged mitt picks up dust really well *and* you can wash it out when it gets too dirty, then continue to use it again when it dries out.

I just dusted the dash with it, and it worked great. Haven't washed it yet.

Have a look @ Griot's.

Lexol vinylex. No cheap shine that will add to dash glare....just a good conditioner. Or I use zaino Z10 "leather in a bottle" on my dash.

I've got the Vinylex, but my detailer was very insistent about leaving the dashes on our car alone! He said to dust with (choose product of your choice [swifties, tack rag, dust mitt, etc]. If dash has dirt on it, use warm water on a dust free cloth (or other wipe). He said that he wouldn't put even Vinylex on the dash (and we both really like the stuff for the rest of the interior vinyl.)

(One more opinion, but please don't ever put that ArmorAll on the dash...)

EriCL, what's wrong with ArmorAll?

I just bought my car so it is still factory-fresh. I would appreciate your detailed explanation on the product and why to avoid it.

Thanks in advance.

The consensus is that the silicone and other petro products in Armor All are actually BAD for vinyl.

I am not a chemist, so I like to check stuff out first. Remember, I used to use the stuff and still have some old bottles sitting out in one of the garages. So it wasn't like I was some genius who did some award winning tests *and* proved that it isn't so great.

I wanted to treat my Acura CLS as best as possible, and I have about 1" of papers on tires, an inch of paper on car-detail product, and I call a bunch of people who work on stuff (day in/day out).

Go to Google and enter "Armor ALL Bad" and go from there.

I downloaded a bunch of car care product faqs over the last 3 months, and all of them said, "Don't use Armor All Protectant on vinyl."

So, I think the biggest deal is the silicones, and the fact that they don't even recommend it for clear plastic (makes one wonder).

BTW -- the dash is something that you don't want to be reflective, especially in our cars. The detailer(s) I've talked to have been really serious about not using anything on the dash except (dust removal tools and a wipe with warm water). (They told me this, I haven't run exhaustive studies.)

Here is another quote from another site (check out the link to the 303 link. I haven't picked any up yet. But, I'm going to order some. The detailer who did my wife's car used it he raves about it):

"Armour All and similar products are silicone based. That's whta creates that great shine. What it fails to do is create a means to thwart UV damage. As tires begin to disintegrate...anybody ever have brown
tires?...wait, better yet, check this out:

http://www.303-products.com/

Bottom line is that drying and rotting can be encouraged through the use of some silicone based products. The URL above will do a good job of explaining it more in depth."

(The above was an excerpt. The 303 stuff is also in the classic car catalog. The detailer used it mainly on my wife's Altima door rubber seals and on the tires.)

303 Protectant is the best. Will not dry vinyl or rubber like Aromorall will.
