I use the same soapy water as I use on my car when I wash it everytime. If there is anything left over, I use Eagle 1 Chrome Polish.

I use Meguiers Chrome polish. Works nice. Like everybody said, I wash it first, then dry, then apply... should turn almost black then you wipe it off to a nice shine.

Do you wash and polish the inside of the tip as well ? there is a film of soot on the inside.

Most insides of the exhaust tips have a coating in em, which does not have a chrome/ stainless finish to it. Just wipe out the inside w/ a wet cloth.

Yes, I have polished the inside of my exhaust tips. They're not quite as mirror finished as the outside, but they're noticeably shinier than the matte finish they start out as. I used Mother's Billet polish (seemed to work more quickly than the chrome polish) to get them that way. It took about 6 or 7 applications per wheel to get them shiny. I'll probably do them again this week as it's time to detail again, and see if they come out even shinier.
