Clay bar Usage

I bought the only clay bar here in town and it is made by Mothers. It came with a Quick detailing solution to keep the clay bar lubed. I used it but it left a nasty residue that was a pain to get off.

Is there a better solution to use with the clas bar?

Well it wasn't that it wasn't lubed it is just the crap it left behind. Is that normal, or am I doing something wrong? Or is there anything better to use?

Well you want to dry not to let the lube dry. If it does, use a good quality car soap and it should come off. I use dishwashing liquid as it removes any grease and grime that the clay bar did not get off.

use more of the mother's spray bottle (red). it shouldn't be hard to take off the residue at all. use a microfiber cloth

edit: was the stuff left on ur paint from the liquid, or from the claybar?

No problem with using the clay bar here. After I received my car from the dealer, I noticed that it had a rough feeling on all of the flat areas and a little on the upper sides. Appears that it is either water spots or paint overspray - I think overspray. I used the clay bar from Mothers and it worked great; the finish is now extremely smooth and slippery. Be sure you lubricate the area that you're using the clay bar on and you shouldn't have any problems. The liquid that comes with the product seems to work well too. Remember to turn the clay as it gets dirty from debris; maybe that is your problem, that is, not turning the clay.

First of all, I'm definitely not an expert here. But I can explain what I've done. I first purchased the clay bar for removing above surface contaminants that you can feel when you glide your hand over the finish. If you feel rough spots from bird droppings or whatever that doesn't get removed from washing and/or polish, then the clay bar is perfect.

I originally used it for just those rough spots. But when we got the CL from the dealer on my car, I noticed some water spots. They are very difficult to remove with cleaner/polish but I tried. I later found that the entire car had a 'rough' feeling over the flat surfaces which appeared to be paint overspray. Washing, cleaners and polishes won't touch the overspray so I used the clay bar on almost the entire car. This is how I did it: Before using it, I somewhat flattened it so that about a 2" by 3" portion was somewhat flat against the body. Then I used the Mothers spray that came with the bar, and sprayed about half one fourth of the hood. Then I immediately began using the bar, pressing lightly at first, then adding a little more pressure, gliding the bar back and forth, all the while continuing to keep the surface lubricated by using more spray if needed - the surface must be wet (lubricated) for the clay bar to work. You can tell it's working as the body panel is unbelieveably real slick after you use. Also, don't let the spray dry on the car. If you're not finished with an area, keep spraying to keep it wet. When you're done using the clay on a section, then remove the spray with a dry cotton towel and you'll be amazed how slick your paint is. After I got the hang of it, I did an entire section at a time like a fender, trunk, etc. It doesn't take very long at all to do; I think I did the entire car in less than an hour, maybe 30 to 45 minutes. Oh, don't forget to turn the clay as it become dirty, that is, work with it to obtain a clean side to do a different section. I believe a Mothers clay bar is probably good to do your car maybe 2 times. NAPA sells a bar which is much larger for I think about $25, and they sell a kit like Mothers for about $15 but with a much smaller bar. Remember also that the bar will not effect below surface contaminents. I hope this helps and let me know if I forgot something or you need more info. Happy claying!
