Can y'all help me get started?

Hi everyone,

First off, thanks to everyone here whom participates and shares their knowledge and wisdom!

I HAVE been perusing the forum, and the pinned articles, but have not found a step by step how-to post.....

I just purchased a new TSX (crystal pearl black) on Saturday, and I want to get this baby protected with a polymer coat asap.

ExcelDetail (Patrick) was kind enough to offer help, so hopefully I can hook up with him, if his schedule permits.

In case it does not, I wanted to pose a few questions, and see if y'all could help me on my way.

(please keep in mind that I am a newbie detailing moron!)

Ok, so I'm seeing that there are different color pads/rags, and from what I've read, these pads have a different abrasiveness level.

Are the colors uniform? Meaning, if a red pad (for example) were abrasive with one seller, can I pretty much count on red pads being the standard for abrasive?

Second question is in regards to the machine buffer. It looks like the thing needs pads, AND a rag that raps around it. Am I understanding that right?

What kind of pads do I start with?

Do I just use one pad as the base, and change only the rag that goes around it?

My new TSX already has swirls. Should I do some polishing, to get the swirls out, even though it's new? I'm guessing I should wash, and then polish, before I do the polymer?

Can anyone help with the precise rags, wash mits, pads I should use?

Not just mention a specific one, but can anyone also explain what rag to use for what purpose, and why?

If there is a thread that explains all this, feel free to point me to it!

thank you!!!

not too sure about the rag part, maybe that is a picture of a bonnet to remove the wax..I just use my microfiber towel in hand.

What kind of pads do I start with? least aggressive method first, so least amout of cut from pad and polish.

Do I just use one pad as the base, and change only the rag that goes around it? you need mulitple pads, if doing just your car, probably 2 of each color IMO

My new TSX already has swirls. Should I do some polishing, to get the swirls out, even though it's new? I'm guessing I should wash, and then polish, before I do the polymer? I would add clay into the mix after wash, do you know how long it sat on the lot? and would def do a polish before the sealant.

Can anyone help with the precise rags, wash mits, pads I should use? I would get a proline grout sponge from lowes if I was you for the wash media, very cheap, like two dollars and they do a great job. Microfibers I would get from Pat at excel, he will give you the right info for those starting out.

Not just mention a specific one, but can anyone also explain what rag to use for what purpose, and why? The microfibers you get from Pat I would only use on my paint, you can go to your local auto supply store to get microfibers to clean door jambs and engine, usually referrred to secondary towels.

thank you!!!
hopefully I did that right so you can tell how I answered your questions

I think this will answer a lot of your questions so long as you're willing to do the reading.

This reminds me of when I first started really getting into detailing, about a year ago...god did my eyes hurt from looking at the computer screen all the time.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone here.

I'm reading and learning!

I got in touch with Patrick though, and now I'm in good hands.

Beginners in the LA area, I highly recommend contacting ExcelDetail (heck, even outside the area!).
