Buffing out Arizona "Pin-striping"

Hey guys my buddy has asked if I could help him out with selling his truck for something that gets better mileage. I went to evaluate his paint, he's got lots of surface marking. The finger nail test show's that 90% of the marking is just surfacy stuff. Nothing that the nail really catches on.

All the stuff I have in my arsenal is here in this post.

I'm sure I need some heavier duty compound. Would I need a more aggressive pad than Orange too? I'm not going to get a rotary buffer to fix this either. Suggestions?

Here's the damage. Keep in mind the fender was wiped off, and the other picture is with dirt.

Yup, except here in Arizona it's from all the brush, tumbleweeds, and mesquite tress. Yeah he does take his truck offroading to go hunting.

i know as you said most of the shit is going to just be surface scratches, and i would say a buffing/waxing would get rid of most of it, but then again i am no detailer though (but do know a couple of things though with paint)

edit: i probably have a couple more supplies then you, but not a whole lot though, compared to some people here

I'd do a pass with the Opt Compound on a yellow pad then again on the orange pad then polish on a white pad. Then follow it with ( assuming its black ) with Turtle Wax black pigmented wax. You will be suprised what that will hide seeing he just wants to sell it.

So you wouldn't start with the hyper compound or anything heavier? just a yellow pad?

I didn't want to go with the hyper because you didn't have it and I think the compound on a yellow pad will cause enough unwanted hazing.

I'd also start with a yellow pad, then move to orange and so on

If the Hyper Compound spray would be recommended, then I can do that to. Since I have neither that pad or the Hyper, so I'd have to order something.

I didn't suggest the Hyper because of the hazing with the yellow pad.

Okay, good to know. I'm going to get both the Hyper and the Yellow. I will try the least aggressive method first though. It's always good to have it just in case.

I think I'd start with Orange and OC, unless you have a little experience. If you go with Hyper and Orange, you're going to wonder what happened to your paint (unless you've seen it before).....
Dale buddy, I never thought I'd see the day you'd recommend TW-BPW! Even if it was going up for sale.....!

Thats the only reason ... but as a cover up it works great ..

This Bronco was like that & water spots and what I suggested was used.
Before

After

He had been trying to sell it for 2 months, I did this for him and he sold it in 4 days. I saw it a month later and it was dirty but still looked good.

Don't get me wrong .. its not something I'd do outside of this instance.

If I have time this weekend, I'll see if he will let me do a test spot on his truck just to see how it goes. First will be the Orange and OC II, then I'll do the Yellow (4" pad) w/ OC II and see how it goes.

Also where do you find the TW-BPW? I just looked on their site and they only mentioned 3 sites, does any local auto parts stores carry this product. As I see AG.net doesn't have it. If it's not local, I'll probably just stick to the wax/sealant i already have. Duragloss TPP #105, as I love how easy that stuff goes on and off!

You apply it by hand not machine and it may stain a couple of towels taking it off but they wash out and even tho stained don't do any harm.

Off topic, but I saw you posting over on T-4R.org and saw your wife had a TL, nice to see you posting over here as well.

Yup, I sure am over there too! They are a great source for the T4R.

I also know that here in the Wash & Wax there is a great amount of detailing knowledge, so here is where I come for info on this subject. Plus I take a look in the 3G TL section here a few times a month.

I ordered a few more things from Autogeek, sorry exceldetail. If you would of had the LCS CCS Smart Pads I would have ordered from you. Hopefully they are slow in their shipping so I don't get them while I'm out in California for the week. Guess I'll get Zac to come over and pick it up for me if it comes early. Zac is the guy who owns the truck I'm gonna detail, lives in the neighborhood too.

You know .. I ordered them a long while ago and used them a couple times and never liked them at all . I find they clog with product and never let the polish break down properly.

They might work ok on a rotary but I never could get them to work on a PC .

Hmmmm..... didn't really have a problem with them when I detailed my 4runner.

What's a better choice? Now that I'll have like $118.96 worth invested in pads. Wish you would of mentioned that when I initially looked into getting all the detailing stuff. Ah... too late now. No need to cry over spilt milk now. ;-)

I use the LC regular pads without the dimples. The dimples I think were marketed out of necessity because other companies were coming out with gimickie pads.

So tomorrow I will be doing Zac's truck, should I bother to clay bar? Since he's just going to sell the truck anyways? Normally I would, but just curious.

Also if I have to step up to the Yellow pads with the compounding should I still do the orange and white pads or just go down to the white pads?

Well started off this morning. So far looks as if the Yellow pad & Optimum Compound II the then followed with a white pad and Optimum Polish II are going to do the trick. Much better though. I'll post some pics later, just had to come in for the start of my favorite "medicine"
