Angry $400K. It doesn't buy you what it used to!

When you spend $400K, you'd expect to get more than what my poor customer did.

He just took delivery of his 2010 Ferrari 599 HGTE. It was flown over from Italy less than two weeks ago, made a brief stop at the local dealership (they had strict orders not to touch it...and they actually followed those orders), and then it was immediately brought to me for a new car prep.

I've worked on enough new Ferraris to realize that there's going to be some polishing, but was not expecting what I found!

It has very severe holograms, repainted areas, poorly blended touch-up or "spot" painting, overspray all over the hood and left side of the car, d/a sanding pigtails, deep scratches, and a few burnt edges to boot! What was originally planned for a day long session will now spread out over the week.

Take a look at what I've got going on here, and remember, this is BRAND NEW and untouched by the dealership.

Swirls, scratches, holograms, and I don't even know what that is in the middle!

Light reflection isn't supposed to do that...

This is just a small section, but the entire hood is absolutely ridiculous. Crazy holograms!

Heavy overspray on top, scratches and sanding marks on bottom.

A brand new 599 HGTE, $400K. D/A sanding on said car...priceless!

sans wheels:

The cost of these brakes are worth more than my entire car. Carbon Brembos.

Fun, fun, fun!

Crazy rediculous Todd. I really wonder if the owner would have noticed half of the damage you have shown us. I hope the owner realizes how fortunate he is for having you go over his car to make it right.

Respray vs. Todd with a buffer? Now that is priceless!

Wait...this is a brand new Ferrari? And the paint was this bad? Why did he accept delivery? I mean, I get it that it's a 2010 Ferrari, but for $400k, I would sure as hell expect a better paint job.

Todd, what did you charge him for the paint correction? Do you have final pictures?

After all the reading I did on Autopia, this kind of damage coming out of the Ferrari factory is pretty much SOP. I think it's unreal that a $400,000 car looks this bad but yet a brand-new $17,000 Hyundai Elantra looks so much better.

Great work, Todd!

Steven,

Under the garage lights I could tell that it had some defects, but it wasn't until I stripped the filling glaze from the surface and turned on the inspection lights that I could tell just how bad it was. The owner would have seen it in the same lights when he picked it up, and there's no sunshine in Ohio this time of year! Unfortunately this kind of stuff is pretty standard with Ferrari.

I have a few more days of work before I'll finish this job, so I don't have any final photos yet. I'll be putting together a big writeup on DI when it's done.

And how much? It won't be cheap...

Thanks Andrew, and you're correct.

You noticed that too? I saw that show and immediately noticed all of the holograms when they pulled the car outside.
