Question about transferring TPMS from 06 TL rims to 05 A-Spec rims

Does anyone know if it's possible to transfer the TPMS sensors I have on my 06 TL stock rims to a set of 2005 Gunmetal A-Spec rims? If yes, is it difficult to do so?

Also, is there any setback at all of doing this method instead of getting a set of 2006 A-Spec rims which already come with the TPMS sensors? I've heard that the 05 A-Spec rims and the 06 A-Spec rims are the same except that the 06 A-Spec rims already come with the TPMS sensors on them. If you transfer over TPMS sensors from another TL car, isn't that the same thing as getting an 06 A-Spec package or is the wheel and where the TPMS goes actually different too on an 06?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks sushi.

I had two more quick questions.

1) Are the valves different on the 05 and 06 or are they again the same and the 06 just has the sensors on them? I guess I'm trying to make sure that there's no difference in the structure of the rims at all. Like if adding the sensors to a 05 is actually a mod or actually just an option that's always been there for them.

2) How do you actually transfer the sensors over? Sorry I'm a newb and I'm not exactly sure how to take out the sensors from my 06 and put them on my 05.

Thanks!

There is no difference on the valves except that for the 06 the valve and the sensor is one piece. You just install them just like the regular valves. Make sure it seats good before tightening if you are doing it yourself.

If you're removing the 06 valve with the sensor, it comes out as one piece.

The rims are exactly the same so you could call it 05 for the 06 rims. When you buy the 06 rims you get the valve with the sensor attached instead of just the metal valve as with the 05.

My

I believe the 04-05 rims are different from the 06 rims. The 06 has a deeper cutout where the valve is. This is to take weight off that part of the rim to compensate for the extra weight of the TPMS. If you add TPMS to an 04-05 rim it will be off balance due to the extra weight of the TPMS on that side of the rim. I would suggest getting the wheels re-balanced when doing this.

Oh wow....I didn't know that. But it's still possible to transfer the valve stem with the TPMS sensor on the 06 to the 05, mount/balance the wheels, and have no issues correct?

The 06 wheels actually have word "TPMS" printed on the inside of the wheels on one of the spokes on each wheel so i think there might be a difference in the wheel compared to the 05 wheels.

regardless of what you do, you need to rebalance the wheel. that is a must. i had mine balanced when they installed the sensor and the tire on the new rims.

I got my 05 A-Spec wheels installed and transferred the TPMS sensors on my stock 06 wheels over. The wheels are PERFECT and the sensors work great on the 05 rims. So I guess that disproves anyone who thought that you couldn't do this

Thanks for all the help guys!

I was reading through the service manual about the TPMS system. The only difference in the TPMS wheels is that they have counterweights built into the wheel to balance out the weight of the TPMS sensor.

As Sushi mentioned, it'll be critical to balance the wheels after you add the sensors.

I know this issue has been discussed already, but would like to ask you a few questions in order to clarify. I drive a 2005 Acura TL with Navigation, but it does not come with TPMS. I know the 2006 Acura TL does come with TPMS. The question is, is it possible just to buy the sensors or the TPMS from an 06 TL and install it on my 05 TL? If so do I need to buy the 06 TL Wheels? or all I need are the sensors? if you can clarify on this that would be greatly appreciated.

The sensors won't do you any good without the computer to accept the signal. The wheel is meaningless in the equation. So, no, don't bother.
