G-049: Back up lights too dim!

Has anyone upgraded their back up lights to be brighter? If so what product, and how did it work out?

I can barely see the way down my own driveway while backing up. I would like to upgrade to a higher intensity bulb so I can worry less about backing into things in the dark.

I searched, and besides a spirited discussion from April on the true purpose of backup lights, I didn't find anything of value.

I replaced mine with a set of PIAA Extreme White bulbs. It's a clean white with a blue-ish tint to it...they work wonders, and they look much better than the crapy stock yellow!! I'm not too sure what the exact wattage is as I would have to go dig up the box, but they only cost about $15....

I'm sure your local Custom Car store would have some....

Looks great. Wish this could help better my eyesight at night (via my 20% of tint). Thanks.

I think it would be fair to assume that the excuse of not being able to see reverse lights would no longer be valid.

Look officer when I shift into reverse

Could these bulbs also be used in the front turn signals?

yup, you have to remove part of the lining from inside the trunk where the plate is, its really simple, just the rubber stoppers and a few tabs, and 1 screw...

another option that i have is the Polarg M6 which i got from xtremely automotive in idaho. (208) 798-7878. they are $8 each. these bulbs are also bluish in color but shine very bright white. they are rated at 18 watts, i believe. i have tints and these help alot.

talk to Chad and tell him Pete Nowik sent you.

hope this helps.

I ordered the PIAAs yesterday. No one local had them so I ended up getting them shipped through a Custom shop in NC. I'll let you guys know when I get them if the vendor is any good.

I ordered the PIAAs last night as well. My second batch of LEDs should've arrived by then as well.

I'll try to do the back-up PIAAs and the license plate LEDs at the same time.

Was replacing the trunk, console, and glovebox lights as easy as the interior was?

In my case, I didnt change the glovebox light, so I cant say how easy/hard that is. As for the console, that is pretty easy. Just pop out the plastic light cover and replace the bulbs.

For my trunk, I had a 'streetglow' blue light tube installed. Its mounted on the roof of the trunk...towards the back, where the regular bulb usually is. In my opinion, that was a pretty cool mod that took about 20mins to install and only cost about $30.

There's nothing like opening your trunk at night and having the trunk glow blue.....

Thx.

They're 6600k PIAA HID Bulbs.... Real HID bulbs, but give more of purple/blue-ish tint like an Audi/BMW.

Stock HID's come with 3500k (i think?)...these just bump up the richness of the color. In actuality, they make the stock HID look like a stock yellow light when compared side by side....

If you check out PIAA 's website, you'll find more info there...

Am I missing something here? I have all of my trunk liners out and was looking at the bulbs. I found that the reverse lamp is a 921/906 style. The rear turn signals are the 7440 style. The 7440 is a bit larger and will not fit in the reverse socket (at least not without jamming it in...I didn't try). Not trying to call anyone out here, just wanted to confirm your upgrade. It sure would be nice to get a little more lighting to compensate for the window tint. Thanks.

Part Number: PIA19224
Bulb Type: W2
Wattage: 18w

side marker lights,

try the Polarg M6. it is 18 watts and very bright white. it is a 921 bulb that is an exact fit for the reverse lights.

Thanks for clearing this up! As the Rager stated, Piaa does make the proper bulb:
http://www.prolightstar.com/access_bulb/piaa19224.html
Or I'm sure the Polarg jobs will work, as they are the correct size also.

Alright .. received the PIAA 19225 and per above posts didn't even pursue install .. confirmed on a couple of websights that PIAA 19224 looks like a match for the OEM 921 bulb size.

I do have to give mad props to carolinaclassictrucks.com who not only were the cheapest .. but their customer service rocks

I received the original (read wrong) bulbs in 3 days, talked to them today and they're crediting back and shipping new (read correct) bulbs before they even send me a return shipping label for the old bulbs. And yes they know it was my mistake not theirs. They're great people, if you can, send some love their way

By the way, I do not work for Carolina Classic Trucks nor do I receive any compensation for this endorsement.

Hey Guys..... Sorry if I gave out the wrong info

Let me check tonite when I get home and I'll get back 2 ya with the correct info. I'm almost positive that was the bulb size I used, but I can see how I might have made a mistake as I replaced a lot of bulbs at the same time. I may have actually gave the size of a different bulb I used??

I'll get back to you all tommorrow with more info.

Once again, I apologize....

Yup, me too ordered as per RawDogg's post - bulbs are not even close - twice the size of the original bulbs. Also, with Pep Boys free shipping, I believe they are cheaper than carolinaclassictruck.

Sup folks.... I doubled checked the bulb case last night, and sure enough they were not the 7440. They are PIA19224 - W2 as stated by KBOM.

Sorry 'bout the mix up...
