FIXED REAR DECK RATTLE -- Details AND PICS!! inside 3G Garage #F-079
No thanks to all the empty promises from "some" members that claimed they'd snap shots of their fix. I promised I would, and as always, I'm coming through for those that are interested. And, a special thanks to all those informative members who helped me figure out how to remove the seats. First here are the pics:

Total time: 3 hours (why? B/c I had to first find all the bolts, and it was a bit cumbersome accessing some of those bolts. Then, it was tedious to manipulate the back of the rear seat out of the car, and then it was a breeze to take the bottom of the rear seat out)
Tools required: 1) ratchet w/ extension, 2) duct tape, 3) padding -- seen in above pic
Top pic: a pic of my XM wires coming through from the XM receiver in the trunk as they travel to the center console where I have integrated an interface for my mp3 player.
Second pic: repeat of #1, please ignore.
Third pic: some carpet padding that I used to cut small squares out of in order to stuff the gap b/w the seat belt tensioner and the rear deck metal (cause of the rattle)
Fourth pic: you can see the rear seat removed
Fifth: another pic of the chaos
Sixth & Seventh: Instructional pics

Good stuff. You should be enshrined forever in the 3G Garage for your efforts.

Thanks Ron .. I always love to help out.
More details on the result: The rattle is TOTALLY GONE. There is no ifs, ands, or buts about it. This is a common defect in many TL's, and frankly, I don't see many dealerships taking the four hours to do what I did today. Therefore, I've tried to create a very detailed, methodical method of fixing this issue, so hopefully most of you that are semi- to super-mechanically inclined can fix this yourself.
While I had the seat out, I duct taped several other cables that I saw near or abutting metalic elements in the rear deck. This further killed more rattles.

Every time someone writes about removing the rear seat, they spend more time telling how hard it is to get that last bolt in. Did you have a problem with that, and do you have a hint on how to do it.
After all, this is for the 3G Garage, so it has to be perfect.

Ron .. I know exactly what you're talking about -- here goes:
There is one bolt behind each headrest. When you take each respective headrest off, you see this pleated leather dealie that you can put your finger in -- behind this pleat.. deep down, is the bolt in question. You must use the ratchet extension to get to it. Now, it is difficult to replace this bolt b/c it's so deep. I always use the same technique when replacing deep bolts .. I usually tape the bolt to my ratchet socket w/ some duct tape. Then once I fish through that deep hole and start threading the bolt, I tighten the bolt down as much as possible, then start to jiggle the ratchet extension until I feel that it's freed from the tape. You can then fish out the tape w/ your finger and you're done. I totally agree that it isn't easy, but it can be done.
The other two bolts that are difficult to replace are those that are by each respective center seat buckle/receptacle. They are pretty deep, and you'll need a buddy to help retract the cushion of the seating surface in order to visualize the hole for the bolt. Again, it's very tedious, but tape seems to be the only way I can keep the bolt on and find the hole at the same time w/o losing the bolt.

When I did the rear Aspec suspension, I made sure I researched where every bolt was in taking out the back seat (I have since then forgotten). So, last night I had some song on the radio at level 12 of 40 and the rear rattled badly so much that I just might tackle this tonight... Thanks for the pics

The problem is there isn't just "one" fix to fix rattles back there. Why? Because there are so many coming from different things.
- rear deck rattling against the window
- rear deck rattling against the metal rear deck underneath
- 3rd brake light rattling against the window
- seat belt tensioners rattling just because they are bastards
- c pillar panels rattling
- actual speakers rattling
fixes, imho
- the plastic rear deck needs pressed up from the bottom & pressed down from the top
- entire metal deck needs CLDed
- entire rear deck needs CCFed
- 3rd brake light needs clear siliconed so it doesn't touch the glass (or be creative)
- speakers and sub need to be tight and possibly foamed where they rest (CLD may take care of this)
- the "fins" for the plastic rear deck need foamed (CFF may take car of this)
- the seal belt tensioners need to be screwed down and something (be creative)
Phew! I *think* that covers the rear deck area. Horribly poor design imo.
