Move to Texas!?

Hey everyone,

So here's the deal...I recently got a good job offer down in Houston and am very tempted to take it. I am from the NYC area, born and raised, and am a little hesitant about making such a big move (NYC and Houston are pretty different!) The job is good enough to justify the move, but I don't know much about the area. I only know a few people down there so I would pretty much have to start fresh.

I definitely do notice that people are much friendlier down there then up her in NY. Its definitely a different lifestyle. One thing I am worried about is the heat, especially the HUMIDITY. From what I hear, its unbearable in the summer time.

Anyways, just wanted your opinions, maybe some of you have moved to Houston from elsewhere and could give me some advice/input.

Thanks

Born and raised in Houston. Yes it does get hot in the summer, extremely hot. As long as you keep yourself hydrated throughout the day, then you'll be alright.

i work out side, even in the summer. sometimes im in shade and sometimes i'm not. when i'm not in shade, heat really gets to me and causes headaches and blacking out.

The is the only complain i have about Houston, other than that, its a good place to live at. Crime rate isn't bad, but no where close to New York.

Do u know where u'r gonna be working? i can tell u about nice neighborhoods in the area.

I also come from a cold place, weather and people wise. At the begining the heat was tough but then again you are always in A/C places, car, office, house etc... so what's the heat going to do to you?. After a while you get used to but with time the city grows in you and believe me the low cost of living is going to surprise you coming from NYC.
Depending on what you like to do and how you like to live you will find many places that are cool

i wouldn't let the heat discourage you honestly. houston is a great city, of course it has its issues, but there is a lot to do. lots of fine dining, and great restaurants, interesting parts of the city with lots of character, and friendly people.

I appreciate all the input everyone, I am headed down to Houston in 2 weeks to do a follow up interview and will do more exploring when I'm down there. What are some good areas to live? I hear the heights (Washington st), galleria and midtown are all good places. I would be working downtown on Louisiana street....

Keep in mind im single and just turned 24, I want to be living in a younger area with attractive women haha.

there are lots of places u can live at and be surrounded by chicks, including all the apartments around memorial park, its also very close to downtown. prolly 5 - 10 minutes.

I know there are more areas, but cant remember.

midtown sounds like its your place then.... also check out montrose, its certainly got some character......

it seems like the galleria is a little out of vogue these days, (with the exception of post oak and 610) not much going on there after 10... well nothing that a young professional would be involved with anyways.

heights is a good area, but its one of those places where you can go 2 blocks and it can get bad.

check out upper kirby, im not sure what your price range is, but there are some real nice places that just opened up there.

i hope i made sense. im running on 2 hours of sleep right now...

well in my opinion the first thing you'll notice is that everyones much nicer.

that Northeast tri-state attidude is nowhere here in texas....for the most part.

You will realize quickly that there are no hills, so get used to seeing LOTS of roads that look like they go into the horizon.

Other then that it gets really fucking hot here in the summer but its not for very long. Spring and Fall are awesome

i agree with montrose... seeing that you're coming from New York and the housing there is ridiculous post oak won't be bad either. if you want the blondes you're gonna have to come up to the Tomball and Spring area though

not exactly city life out there... more like lifeless suburbia with endless, anonymous homes and strip malls. no offense

Depends on where you live at in some areas but some areas in Houston are nice. I forgot where my friends sister stays. They live in a pretty nice neighborhood. We always stay there for the tx2k events. Overall its not a bad town. Quite a bit of culture there not as much as dallas but enough to be amazed.

Thanks everyone for your replies. If I end up taking the job I am going to be driving my TL all the way down from NYC. Not looking forward to all the miles im gonna have to put on her...

Oh and I was talking to my friend today and he said that Montrose has a very large gay population, just wondering if this is true or not...

He had very good things to say about Midtown in particular. I kinda want to spend no more than 850 a month if possible

I moved to Houston from Wisconsin 3 years ago. The only things that suck, is not having your friends and not knowing the area. The weather is awesome. IMO summer is not quite as bad as they say. But I prefer hotter weather vs. colder. It can can get nasty hot and humid in WI too, it's just that the direct sun is a lot more intense in TX. Also it's all summer long, vs. WI is may be a stretch of a few nasty humid days. Winter is awesome too, nothing like WI. In WI if you have a really nice car, you also need a winter beater. Few good things, Houston has a great economy, ethnically diverse, and there is plenty of other areas for road trips, Austin, Louisiana, ect. If you're into music, plenty of good shows and artists come to Houston too.

There's been a lot of construction going on so you might have to get used to traffic or get very familiar with the roads to avoid it. But i'm sure you're used to traffic since you are from NYC. Keep us updated

Don't let the heat get to you. All you have to do is sit back in your Acura turn up the a/c and crank up 104 KRBE the Beat live on the Richmond strip. Paul "Cubby" Bryant broadcasting live from Kaboom!! I live in Dallas but Houston is great town and has great nightlife!

Hey guys,

So I have finally made the move down to Houston, arrived in a few days ago, it was a looong drive from NY. After the 26 hour drive, you can imagine my car is pretty filthy, lots of bugs etc..

Can you guys recommend a place to get it washed? Preferably a hand wash/touchfree place, I dont take them through the brush wash anymore (learned that the hard way). Oh by the way I am staying with my Uncle in the Piney Point area, so anywhere nearby or on the west side of town would be best. Thanks!

Might want to consider staying in Sugarland, TX which is right there next to Houston, nice area to live, and just go to work from there.

Yea but I want somewhere more "urban" where I am among other single young professionals. From my understanding, Sugarland is a great place to live, but more geared towards family suburban living. Correct me if i'm wrong...
