Windows XP Question
Does anyone out there know how to stop the Messenger Service pop ups? Ever since I upgraded to XP, this crap pops up all the time when my PC is idle. Thanks in advance fellas.

well - if you're running the latest version (5.0) - open the main Messenger screen, go to Tools menu, Options, General tab, and uncheck all the "Alerts"..... this should stop them from coming up... I just tested this on mine, it worked. I think even if you're running a version 4.x - this will still be the same process to disable the popups.
Another thing I noticed about this damn MSN messenger, Micro$oft, under the cover of the "upgrade" from 4.7 to 5.0, enabled two default options, both of which change the way MSN behaves when you turn on and/or login to your computer. The first change makes the MSN window come up by default, and the second change makes this new lame "MSN Today" window come up. At first I thought it was a change not disable-able (is that a word? hehehe) - but then I noticed there were two checks for these two pesky windows in the same tools, options, general tab. I admit I do use MSN messenger - but I much rather have it silently remain in the background, than pop up these annoying screens.

Disabling the messenger service won't do it. Messenger service isn't for MSN Messenger, it's for Windows messenger. If you don't have the latest patches and whatnot and cannot uninstall it from Add/Rem programs, here is the manual way to uninstall it:
rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %WinDir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Once that's done, click Start, Run type gpedit.msc and hit OK. Under Computer Configuration open Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Messenger. Double click "Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run" and enable. Double click "Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initally" and enable. Close group policy and you're done.
