i changed my mother board, CPU, memory and hard drive, reinstalled XP Pro and now it wont shut down. it say shutting down, then it just hangs. how can i resolve?

 

You got an antivirus program?
Sometimes antivirus programs don't want to "let go" of their application, thus preventing the system from shutting down.

Check to see what applications are still running when you are trying to shut down, and shut them down manually and see what happens.

 

Did you do a fresh install of XP? there are fixes for this on MS's update page

Try going into task mgr and killing programs one by one, and trying to shut down afterwards.

By doing that I discovered that ad-watch (part of adaware) would cause my computer to ignore the shutdown request. once I quit/kill it, I'm fine.

 

Who shuts down their computer

I think the longest I have gone with it on is one month or close to that without restarting
