The Windows Home Server Thread
Here's some important info about drives larger than 2TB and about GPT disks.
http://usingwindowshomeserver.com/20...nt-to-byob-33/
Basically MBR only supports drives up to 2.2TB it's a 32-bit limitation. Drives over 2.2TB have to be GPT formatted. WHS supports GPT as backup drives but it will split disks larger than 2.2TB into multiple partitions. The reason is because VHD (which is used by WHS to backup drives on the server) doesn't support dynamic of difference disks larger than 2TB so it has to limit the size of partitions on Server so that they don't end up exceeding the VHD format limit. Also WHS does not support client PCs that have GPT disks. So if you have a GPT disk then it's not getting backed up.

Supposedly the part about WHS not supporting backup and restore of GPT disks on client PCs is a bug that hopefully will be fixed. Otherwise full GPT support isn't coming until Windows 8, I guess it VHD that's holding us back.
Oh dougie fresh I was doing some research on how to configure my ECC RAM and stumbled across this little white paper from AMD about why you should have ECC.
http://www.amd.com/us/Documents/47644A_ecc_embedded.pdf
So with 12GB RAM I could average 3 errors per week and if one of them was in important system RAM it could fuck up my world.
http://www.amd.com/us/Documents/47644A_ecc_embedded.pdf
DRAM is susceptible to random occurrences of bit(s) flipping, or changing logical states
unexpectedly. While originally attributed to alpha particles from the device packaging, later research
has shown this to largely be the result of background radiation. There are various influences which
can vary the frequency of the errors, for example chip design techniques, memory density, etc.
DRAM manufacturers strive to accurately model and simulate the soft error rate (SER) of their
technology, but this is a difficult process and is arguably inaccurate. There are also many factors that
affect all error rates in real world scenarios. The obvious system-level challenges exist, such as
ambient temperatures inside an enclosure, contaminants, connector degradation, etc. Additionally,
altitude plays a significant role in the SER. A typical SER might be one bitflip per 2-4 weeks per
gigabyte of DRAM. To put this another way, a 4GB system can expect to encounter roughly one error
each week.
The impact of bitflips to system integrity can vary. On the very innocuous end of the spectrum, the
error can occur in an unused area of memory or simply change the tone of one pixel of color on a
display. Moving toward the damaging end of the scale, a bitflip might cause a program to crash
(typically shut down by the operating system). An error may occur in sensitive data, and if undetected
it may eventually be written to disk and perpetuated. Of course, a bitflip may occur in the operating
system’s kernel, or elsewhere, which can cause an entire system crash. The system may potentially
come down in such a way that the exception handler(s) are not capable of saving the important data
still in memory.

Is there any value in having 8gb of ram in the type of box I'm building or will 4gb be enough? I was thinking of grabbing 8 so that they are 4gb sticks to leave some room for future re-use in a newer machine.
yeah you gots to use the download manager. try the download again using internet explorer. Then click on the button download using FTM. It's an Akamai ActiveX program that downloads it. If it pauses during that then just hit resume. Connect downloads pretty much only work with the IE FTM, otherwise it fails unless it's a small download.

It's not a problem for WHS Vail. Just the first WHS.
There's a couple big changes going on in the world of hard drives with the upcoming GPT transition and the Advanced Format 4K sector thing.

so I'm safe to roll with these drives? vail can align them without any additional help?
Vail, 7, and Vista are fine. There's no need to align, only XP/2003 need the align toolhttp://www.anandtech.com/show/2888

Well cat 5e is required for gbe so regular cat 5 isn't enough. I redid my whole network in cat 6 because I got all the cables I needed really cheap from my job. Can't say I noticed a difference but the whole thing only cost me about $7
My bosses were talking to me today about backup for our VMs and RBS servers and I recommended Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials (WTF is with these long ass names!!). We're going to look into it. I have a feeling that i won't be able to use it because it probably won't support server 2003 r2 as a Client OS.
OK, I just got my 2TB drive in. I'm gonna have to order another cause the math just isn't working. When WHS goes RTM my setup is going to be 2TB drive for WHS OS and Client backups. Then I'm going to have another identical 2TB doing twice daily backups of that drive. Then I'll take out my 1TB (since it will be replaced by the second 2TB). Then I'll have a 1.5TB drive for my media which I'll mirror to another 1.5TB. My videos are about 600GB right now so that should give me a lot more room togo and if I outgrow the 1.5TB I'll get two more 2TB drives.
I must say I'm not very impressed with newegg right now, I placed more order on Monday morning and it still hasn't shipped. It's still sitting in processing status, pretty lame!
I'm really pretty pissed off with newegg, my stuff hasn't shipped yet and they keep having issues processing my order. Never have I ever had to add my shipping address with my credit card company, or even had to have contact phone numbers match. I would have canceled this order but this asshats are the only store that has what I want. Really what's the point of Verified by Visa if I have to jump through 16 other hoops.
Yes. My billing address is my parents house because that's where all my mail goes because I never bothered to change anything when I moved. Shipping address is my condo. Ive never had an issue doing this in the last 8 or so years either while I was away at school or living else where. I don't know why but newegg is particularly anal apparently. I use my work phone instead of my cell because if the sell my info to 3rd party marketers I don't want to be harassed on my cell. I just did the exact same thing on monoprice.com and no issue, my order was shipped same day. What really pisses me off is that if I didn't start asking questions my order would still be stalled with newegg, they never once reached out to me to say there was an issue, which is pretty shitty customer service. I don't think they will be getting much of my future business.
I already did. I doubt I'll get shit since its my first time buying from them and it's not that big of a purchase. I'll just steer clear of them unless they are the only ones that have what i want.
guess they have gone down hill over the years, they used to be great!
i used to use them all the time cause i didnt mind paying tax. And their regular shipping would get to me the next day cause i lived in CA.
i remember at school i ordered something from newegg the night before and it was at my door the next day. really threw me off.

I spend thousands of dollars with newegg every year. Practically every computer part I buy comes from newegg. I've never had an issue with newegg itself. With parts yeah but not with them. Practically everything ships same day and often things arrive a day earlier than expected.
I've never used the socialized version though just the capitalized one. The workers there probably suck because they can't be fired......

I've never had a problem with newegg either and I also buy almost everything there that's computing related.
The difficulties Dougler is having are entirely because he's international and residential with different delivery and billing addresses, a huge red flag for potential credit card fraud.

I don't have a problem with them turning around and selling returns, but they need to either have a grasp of what certain used parts entail or have a better QA program in place.
I'll order from them again, but I'll be very careful about it in the future and ensure that I can test the parts immediately.
Bingo. Which is understandable. What is not understandable is how they just let my order languish in purgatory instead of reaching out and saying hey we need this confirmed so please do X step and let us know once your done so we can verify. If I didn't look into it because I still haven't received shipping notice then who knows how long it could have sat there.
MS released a KB article about WHS and the new Advanced Format Disks.

I just installed the Awieco WakeOnLAN and DriveInfo Add-ins. The Wake on Lan allows you to wake your other PCs either from the WHS dashboard or you can install the add-in on all connected PCs since WHS Vail will push the add-in to all PCs automatically once they start the launchpad app.
It looks like this

Drive info gives you a pie and bar chart view of your drive space. Mine currently looks like this:
