So I always put my Windows 7 PC on standby, and it wakes up every now and then, at night or sometimes during the day. What's the log that tells you definitely what event caused the wake up?

You need to check the advanced power options for wake up options.

right click on desktop > personalize > screensaver > changer power settings > change plan settings > change advanced power settings > sleep

making sure the wake timers are disabled

I've had that happen a couple times too. Check event viewer. There's a log of when your PC woke up and what caused it. The source is "power-troubleshooter"

Maybe your mouse moved minutely? You can uncheck the box "allow this device to wake computer" in the device manager for your mouse and keyboard if you want. Then you'll need to hit the power button to wake your PC.

Also look under scheduled tasks, there maybe a task set to run that wakes your PC from sleep. For example the WMC scheduled task woke my PC at 4am so I went to scheduled tasks and unchecked the box that said run task even if PC is sleeping.

I can't remember if I had disabled wake timers yet in power options or not when WMC woke in the example above but it was when I last checked.

That disable wake timers option was a godsend for me! I was so excited when I saw that back in the beta. My Vista machine used to always wake at 3AM due to some scheduled task, which meant I woke up at 3AM.

Yeah, I make sure only my keyboard can wake the PC and I actually saw it happen with my own eyes when no one was touching it. I know it's not WoL too.

Thanks, I just turned it off. I noticed that MS Security Essentials has a scan Sunday at 2 am, so that accounts for last night's wake-up event. But it also happened during the day a few times.

Actually I checked and the only non-WoL Power-Troubleshooter events are USB events... Is there any way to find out which USB device does it? I know my mice (I have two) both have wake up disabled. I also have wake enabled for my USBUIRT device but that should only happen when I knowingly use that function on my remotes, and I'm pretty sure no one touches that in the middle of the night or during the day when I'm away.

I've had my system resume from sleep a few times due to unknown "USB Root Hubs"

I also can determine what exactly is waking it. I've thought of troubleshooting this problem by unplugging all my USB devices till I discover when it stops but then it doesn't happen often enough for me to care.

Also my Bios has an option that can control what can resume a PC from sleep. I have the option to let the BIOS control what can resume the PC or I can leave it up to the OS. I've got it set to OS now but if I set it to BIOS I can enable or disable the wake from keyboard, mouse, etc. See if your system can do that.

Yeah, mine does that too. I've gotta check the event viewer and see what the deal is. Its annoying because for some reason the speakers pop when it resumes from standby.
