What settings do you use for Handbrake?
This is suppose to work, but I haven't tried it http://makemkv.com/
I had success with RipIt doing a straight DVD rip but damn the files are big. Nice quality though and the files work with Plex.

Mkv isn't so special anymore, but all the cool kids refuse to give it up and still use it for everything. I got a divx certified DVD player that can play pretty much any format I throw at it including mkv, but now I need a bluray player. Upconverting to only 720p is lame.
and on that note Hanbrake 0.9.5 was released today!
I'm curious how this blu-ray support thing will work

nope. old versions used to have dvd decryption but they had to remove it for legal reasons. However it uses VLC player to handle the dvd decryption. But I think that's a OS X only feature. It's not a big deal though, it's faster to decrypt the discs using dvd fab pro or dvd decrypter then quickly load up multiple DVD ISOs instead of one at a time. But I guess it's a more complicate process if you want to do just one DVD.
I know but it would be similar. In Windows you could use AnyDVD HD to decrypt the bluray disc and then use handbrake. Also I'm hearing that you might need to use another software like Daemon tools to mount the decrypted bluray ISO and then use handbrake. Not sure though.......
weird, im just using default settings, but im trying to convert the videos i filmed in vegas to a format my ps3 can play. and when i convert for some reason handbrake is compressing it down from 720p
when i force the resolution to 1280x720 it ends up look like it was zoomed/blown up a bit.

ok.. reloaded the program, i guess it scans the video and determined that my video has blackbars or something on the top and bottom since its a dark video. and thus cropped it/resized it to remove them.
or some crap like that.
need to figure out a faster way to batch convert these.
also for some reason its not loading all of them.

Yes, it will detect black bars at the edges of the screen and automatically crop them out. I've never had an issue with that but you can turn it off. FYI, the settings I use have played back fine on my PS3.
don't worry your little head, I googled it for you

so i just need to update it. ok.
also is there an easy way to batch convert? like right now im using Vuze to batch convert and all i had to do was drag and drop all the files .
im lazy on searching.
Thanks.

I just do the add to queue feature. I'll assume you want to keep the setting the same amongst all your videos so you select the first video get it set up just how you want it then hit start encoding. Then choose the 2nd video source and rename it if you want then choose add to queue. Repeat that for the rest of the videos and you'll have them all setup. You might want to save your presets so that they're there the next time you open the program.
It's really not that hard. It'll only take a few minutes and then you can walk away until it's done. I've done it 300+ times it hasn't fazed me. that's probably cause I often tweak the settings a little bit for each video
it does, but i have to select each title
a little better then opening it one by one.
oh well. not like i would normally batch convert this many videos at once.
thanks apple...

Since we're on the subject in the other thread of video blah blah blah. I figure I'll update this thread. I downloaded the free trial of AnyDVD HD which allows me to rip bluray discs!!!!
So I've been spending all my free time for the past 24hrs trying to figure out the right settings. My main problem seems to be the 360 it seems a little picky about which media it will play. I'm still using h.264 but I've got a file size limit of 4GB and other issues to keep in mind, like bandwidth and real
file format specs.
I really like that with handbrake I can set the target size for the video file and for these blurays. I set them to 4GB and hope for the best. For longer movies I have to go down to 720p but shorter ones I can manage 1080p. For example the Godfather I Have to do in 720p cause it's about 3hrs, while 300 is just under 2hrs so I can do 1080p get a 4GB file and still have pretty darn good quality. I just compared a 1080p 1 min clip that was 155mb (for one minute!) and the same clip 1080p compressed down to 35mb. There was a difference but it wasn't a big difference and if I wasn't on my massive dell 27in IPS monitor I probably couldn't tell so I'll gladly take 90% image quality for 1/5th the file size!
The only thing that sucks about handbrake and bluray is that it doesn't support subtitles on blurays yet. So the scenes in Godfather part II that take place in Italy don't have subtitles in the video file.
Other than that I'm pretty stoked about this! I'm gonna be putting Planet Earth on my WHS

I guess chapters aren't working either for blurays. Also encode times are like forever! With DVDs my encode speed is around 50-60FPS but these blurays I'm doing 15FPS! It's worth it though
Speaking of subtitles, any foolproof way of embedding them? I'm having to rip the movies, and then watching them and figuring out if I'm missing any. Then re-rip and figure out which track to use. Some movies switch up which subtitle track they use. It's frustrating.
I've ripped over 250 movies with Handbrake in the past month and these are the settings that I settled on.
I originally start with the high profile preset and make some changes. I turn detelecine off cause I don't care about it's framerate since either 24 or 30 will work fine. I set decomb to default since decomb is better than deinterlace I turn deinterlace off. I set denoise to weak, this takes away a slight amount of detail but gets rid off most of the mpeg2 mosquito noise and deblocking is left off. For codec I use h.264 and set the FPS the same as source and use constant quality of anywhere from RF:18.25 to RF:17.75. If it's an old black and white movie I may go lower.
For Audio I remove the 5.1 soundtrack and downmix it to Dolby Pro Logic II. I wanted to keep the 2nd discrete soundtrack but decided not to since HT is in disarray and I didn't want to take up the extra bandwidth.
Subtitles can be tricky cause some movies can use the DVD for foreign langauge parts and some have the the subtitles embedded into the film itself. The Downfall for example is a German movie but I have subtitles disabled since the subtitles are embedded into the movie. If I'm not sure if there's subtitles I'll add an english subtitle track but check the forced only button and choose burned in cause I've had issues with subtitles not showing if I don't burn them in but sometimes they do show, it's hit or miss but it always works if you hit burned in.
Then I leave chapters and advanced tabs alone and these setting work on my iPad and every other device I've tried Mac or PC in the house.
Oh and if a movie is pure black and white with no color tint I'll enable greyscale encoding and that removes all color cause sometimes you can get some slight color noise from crappy mpeg2 compression and greyscale will get rid of all color.

no, forced only means that it only displays the subtitles that are forced to display. Like when you're watching a movie with subtitles off and out of nowhere subtitles appear for a second when someone is talking in a nother language and then they go away. Those are forced subtitles that display even if subtitles are turned off. You want those to display and if you don't have a forced subtitle track then they won't display and you'll be left wondering what that person just said.
sure then you just select the language you want and uncheck the forced only box and choose burned in and that will put all of the subtitles for that language in there. Well maybe try not using the burned in option cause that allows you to turn subtitles on and off like on a dvd burned in means the subtitles are burnt into the movie and can't be taken out. You can have multiple subtitle and audio tracks too
If you choose burned in option and you aren't getting subtitles then the disc was poorly authored. I don't think there's anything you can do.
There's no real standard way for authoring DVDs, having ripped hundreds it seems there are many differences. Cheap DVDs are usually poorly authored and aren't organized in any logical way.
What disc is it that isn't working.....
