That is debatable, many people don't need superlaptops, they just need something that gives them the convenience of a computer when not at their desk. I actually picked that one up the other day, it is great. I paid 1,799 and some change. While I agree that it does not have the biggest hard drive, or the most ram, I have a desktop that handle that. If you are looking for something to supplement your desktop, or you are not a big power user, just the basic tasks, word processing, internet, occasional games etc... then this is a great machine for you.

yep, and for a laptop, the slowest peice tends to be the harddrive. for something that powerful it doesnt make sense not to upgrade the HD to a 7400 rpm (i think thats the quickest thats out right now for portable HDs)

They're huge and very heavy. Not very portable IMO.

BRICK!!!

still, i dont know how for $1,600, 512 megs of memory and 60 gigs of hard drive isn't enough, amisconception

If your getting that your probably not planning on taking it around with you much cause its too large, and if thats the case your better off with a desktop.

but if thats what you want it looks good to me

A desktop replacment laptop basically defeats the whole purpose of having a "mobile/portable" computer. But if you must have the power along with the 10lb weight. HP/Compaq does make great stuff. 512 ram seems enough. 40 Gb hard drive is average, so 60 is a step up. U have to remember laptop drives are only at max of 80 GB now. Average is 4200 RPM, step up is 5400, and the new ultimates are 7200 RPM. the 7200 RPM does make a SIGNIFICANT difference. There is currently a IBM/Haitachi 60 GB 7200 8meg cache for about 230 and a Toshiba 50 GB 7200 16 meg cache for 210. Get one of these drives and ebay ur OEM one off, or you can get an external usb 2 enclossure case and have a 60gb portable drive.

I got the Compaq X1000, that thing is 6.5 lbs. and carring around school, i get tired sometimes. It 6.5 doens't seem alot, but it is.

Besides being large, that notebook is great. It's large size makes it a big annoying to carry around. But besides that it's awesome.

Ignore the other posts about the memory and HD. (you really dont need much more space for normal PC use)

I've owned 7 notebooks, I don't know where their experience comes from. But that is plenty of memory/HD space from my experience...

b.t.w. the difference between a 5400 and 7200 rpm is not the throughput data rate. It's seek time... a 7200 rpm disk will get to the information quicker than a 5400 would. As long as you keep your HD defragmented it wont matter much.

The large cache size on the disks in the post above makes a big difference. But it really depends on what your doing... running winblows the NTFS filesystem gets VERY fragmented quickly, and a 5400 disk would be slow in comparison to a 7200. But if your doing video editing (large files) you dont notice a difference. What can I say about winblows but, defrag, defrag, defrag

What are you using it for?
