Weird iPad2 occurrence.

I was just on anther forum typing a reply to a thread on my iPad when the page all of a sudden jumped to another page in the forum. I pressed the back button and was returned to where I previously was along with the text being present that I already typed. I pressed on the screen to continue typing, and the keyboard was now in split keyboard mode. I had to go into the settings and turn off "split keyboard". Is there a shortcut or something that would cause this? I thought the only way to enable it was from within the settings menu.

If you drag the keyboard up it splits manually. You might have brushed it in the right place.

Otherwise...ghost in the machine

bottom right hand key on the keyboard can be manipulated multiple ways.

Any iPad owner who attempts to type while standing knows it's a cumbersome task; stabbing at the keyboard with one finger while holding the iPad with one hand is less than ideal. Fortunately, Apple made things easier in iOS 5 with a split keyboard. How it works:
  • Whenever the keyboard is prompted, literally pull it apart with your thumbs. Or, long-press the keyboard button (bottom right) and select Split.
  • To go back to the regular keyboard, push it back together with your thumbs, or long-press the keyboard button and select Merge.
  • You can now undock the keyboard when it's in the way of something on the screen. Long-press the keyboard button and select Undock. You can then split the keyboard, if you like.

Dragging the keyboard does nothing. At first holding the keyboard button did nothing as well. Once I went back to settings and set the keyboard split option to on, I was ale to hold down the keyboard button and select to merge it. I guess I must have hovered on that button without noticing. Thanks.
