Webcam Software Advice

I just purchased a webcam to do video conferencing and wanted to ask a few questions.

1. When using software to video conference is it proprietary or can I chat with someone while using different software?

2. If I have to use the same software as the person I'm chatting with can anyone let me know of a free video chat program that works without any issues?

1) You can use all kinds of software. Anything from MSN messenger to Paltalk

2) MSN messenger is pretty good, if both of you have cable internet, the speed and quality is excellent

You generally need to be using the same software as the other party.

Note ....alot of this requires XP on both PC's. I run W2K so it doesn't work for me.
