Want your old laptop to run a little faster?

Simple, switch your desktop image to a colour instead of a real pic...I was watching Call for help and he said it to somebody else, I tried it, and wow...Firefox opens in no time as to where just the frame would open for about 30 seconds, then the whole window would appear...

And Im using a Thinkpad 600E, so its a old laptop that weighs about 15lbs...Pentium 2, 4 GB harddrive ( )...64mb of ram...so its not a fast computer at all...but this sure as hell helped...

Ps, if this is old news or a repost or whatever, here is my tomato to the face -

Wow welcome to 1995 guys....time for a new computer. My desktop is so fast that I can stack all sorts of ridiculous things together and it hardly makes a difference in how it runs.

How much did you pay for that?

This laptop was free....Company I worked for was moving offices and were getting rid of everything, for free.....whatever didnt get taken went to charity, I got this laptop, put XP on it, and its never seen better days...I also have a perfectly good desktop PC, that runs games and everything lighting fast, but right now Im in my living room watching t.v, sitting on the couch and posting on AZ...For the few times I use this laptop, the tips posted in this thread made a great difference...

Do you mean you simply do an "End Process" on some of the applications running every 2 weeks or so?

If so, that doesn't do crap. You gotta go into your services panel and disable items there.

That was two seperate comments. I was just poking fun at you guys because we were doing this back when Windows 3.1 was the shit...

I was just mentioning that I love my new computer because I don't have to fool with it.

Sounds like something is screwed up...is it like that as soon as you open Firefox or after a while?

My POS wireless card in my desktop now starts out about 32, and works its way up to 240-350 over a few days, slowing things down. I can't decide if I want a cheapie Linksys or if I'm gonna spring for a Cisco card for the replacement so I just restart the thing every once in a while. Me=ultimate in lazy.

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

Go through that list and see if there's anything you don't need and disable it.

be careful though, don't disable something without figuring out what it does first.

Otherwise you'll be doing this

I believe if you are using an older release candidate of Firefox you will have this problem (not in all cases).

I think they fixed this issue in the new release candidate. Perhaps you simply need a clean install of Firefox?

what do you mean a clean install? I just upgraded my older version.

I still haven't figured out how FF does it but it keeps my preferences and bookmarks and whatever even after I uninstall and delete EVERYTHING. there are a million hits on google about it and I've tried all of it, still can't find where it stores this crap.

anyway didn't mean to hijack thread, I'll just reinstall and see if that fixes it.

clean install = uninstall program and then do a complete install.

I think it stores your bookmarks and stuff in your Documents & Settings folder in your profile for FireFox. Dont' ask me exactly where in Documents & settings but I'm pretty certain it's in there.

Disabling items in the services panel doesn't actually erase files from your computer. All it does is tell windows which services to turn on when it boots up.

But if you see your computer do something it shouldn't or complain about something, re-enable what you disabled.

it's safer to disable things in small groups so you can track what the problem may be if you have any.

Unless you've installed and uninstalled a lot of crap on your computer, usually there's no reason to even bother going into the service panel and adjusting things. But it's good to check it once in a while.
