Question Vista input monitor question

I know on XP you were able to monitor an input/microphone over the computer speakers. Is it possible on Vista?

I've google and read you can, you can't, tried all the fixes and everything they suggested but still no dice. Do any of you guys know?

As in listen to what's coming into the microphone using Vista's as you record it "sound recorder"? Yeah I tried that recently and it didn't work. Then I downloaded audacity it's free and awesome and it solved all my problems.

Thanks, I'm trying it. Can't seem to monitor it for some reason.

Plus there is another program I'd like to use. It only records when there is noise.

it worked for me. I didn't have any problems monitoring while recording. Play with that program it's got lots of cool effects.
