Vista help

Could someone please help me in "slow people" terms?

About a month or so ago I bought a new pc running vista and my internet is dog slow. I uninstalled MacFee for NOD32 (which I was told was better) but it is still way to slow.

I do search but can't find anything but I know the Acurazine crowd would have some answers.

All the searches talk about shutting off IPV6 or what ever but no one seems to have any issues after uninstalling MacFee.

Please help acurazine and sorry if this should have been posted somewhere else.

Yeah, I have a laptop running XP that is about 17 times faster.

It takes me about 19 seconds to load one page here.

do you maybe have a bit torrent program running on Vista? I've had major slowdowns while running those, it's caused by setting your upload speed to high. That can happen on any OS and will not only slow down the computer running the bit torrent program but also any other computer on your network regardless of OS they're running.

to that you should do this on any new PC. There's probably some process or program running that's slowing it down. Spend 15minutes and uninstall all the craplets that most computers ship with nowadays and hopefully that will solve your problem. Only uninstall the programs you don't use, obviously.

Go to Task Manager, Go to Processes, Show Process for All Users, Look for CSRSS.exe and see if it is eating your CPU....End the process and see if that helps.....Its something to do with IE, but not sure what yet

csrss.exe probably has something to do with RSS feeds. Especially since there's the RSS feed gadget in the sidebar that always running. Go to the task manager and click on networking and see if you have any data transfering going on even when your not using the internet. You can get to the task manager by right-clicking the taskbar (the black bar at the bottom of the screen) and choosing task manager.

then you don't have one. It's a file sharing program that you would've downloaded and installed yourself. this is probably impossible to diagnose over the net especially with the little info we have.

Bad patch cable? Or are you wireless?

Are you using a router / firewall? Are both computers on the network? How are speeds transferring files between the 2 computers if so?

Try going to sites like this and test your speed:
http://speedtest.net/
www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Is it both DL and UL that is slow?

Look in your Task Manager for ANYTHING that might be using alot of CPU or memory. Make sure that "show processes from all users" is checked. You can sort the list by clicking on the column heading. Also, click the "Networking" tab and see if you are using alot of bandwidth (might be some malware running in the background).

Have you done a full virus scan on either of your anti-virus programs? Have you run any anti-spyware software? Try Hitman Pro http://www.hitmanpro.nl/hitmanpro/ It installs a bunch of anti-spyware software, updates them, and runs them all and gives you a compiled report at the end.

What browser are you running? Have you tried another?

Make sure that all software you run is Vista compatible.

Try listing as much as you can about your setup including makes and models of equipment.

I think if it were a cable it would either work or not work at all. If he's wireless he might be getting bad reception which can make a difference, so that's a possibility. With networking tab you need to know that the internet is probably using less than 1% of your available networking bandwidth unless you got real high speed internet. I'm at 1.5mbps DSL. Which means a theoretical max of 1.5mbps out of the available 100mbps. So if you see ANY network activity and your not doing anything on the net that could be a sign of a problem.

This could be a driver problem but since you got a new PC it should've come with hardware designed to work good with Vista. Who makes your PC? You might want to look and see if there's new firmware available for your router it might not work with Vista. I've had problem on Windows machines while using an Apple router and I solved the problem by actually rolling back to and older version of the firmware for the Apple router cause the newest version caused the problem. But usually it's the other way around and the newest version should be the best.

It's prolly not malware since Vista comes with Windows defender pre-installed and it does a pretty darn good job of stopping malware.

Internet Provider: SBC INTERNET SERVICES
Total Tests Taken: 1
Fastest Download: 51 kb/s
Fastest Upload: 63 kb/s
Average Download: 51 kb/s
Average Upload: 63 kb/s

The machine is a Gateway 5420. The router came from SBC and it is a 2wire router that is about a year old. Should I buy a new router that would be compatible with vista?

Can you run those same tests on Win XP and post your results? What type of internet are you paying for? What do you mean by 2 wire router? Is there a model # is it made by SBC?

I just ran the 2 above test and with my DSL 1500kbps (1.5mbps) line I got

from Speakeasy:
1396kbps download
599kbps upload

from Speedtest.net I got
634kbps download
410kbps upload

so yeah your shit is pretty slow, it's running at like 56k modem dialup speed!!
Oh yeah and I don't know if I mentioned it but I'm running Vista ultimate on a pc I built myself on a motherboard that wasn't "designed" for Vista but as you can see that doesn't really matter at all.

OK I did alittle research on your PC model # and nothing looks out of the ordinary. It maybe the Mcafee Internet Security suite but IDK. You don't need to pay for mcafee or norton products anyways when you can get AVG or aVast protection for free and it's just as good and it doesn't slow down your system at all!! Highly recommended (I use aVast!), I guarantee you if you uninstall that Mcafee crap your system will run faster, now it may not make your internet faster but your computer will be faster!! I myself aren't running any anti-virus at all (wouldn't recommend doing that) but when I feel like doing anti-virus I'll use avast! or AVG.

If you got the $$ to spend it might not be a bad idea to buy a new router either a netgear or linksys router and try it out and see what happens. If it doesn't change anything then just take it back.

Something is definately not right. I have cable, and my results are:
4788kbps download
364kbps upload
99ms latency

You are running DSL right? I am guessing that your DSL modem has a built in router.
Check your IP address by doing this:
Click "Start" then "Run".
Type in "cmd" in the box and click "ok".
A window will open up. Type in "ipconfig" and press enter.
Look for the adapter that says "Local Area Connection".
After "IP Address" there should be a number (ie: 192.168.1.100)

Let us know the first 3 numbers (ie: 192.168.1.x)
Also, let us know the model number for your 2wire device.

Have you tried rebooting the 2wire? Unplug the power and wait 20 seconds and plug it back in.

Also, to see if it is an application (like Anti-virus, etc.) slowing it down, try booting into safemode and try the speed test again and let us know the results. Do this by:

Shut down your computer.
Wait 20 seconds, then turn the computer back on.
Start pressing the "F8" key (maybe about once a second) until the boot menu comes up.
Select "Safe Mode with Networking".
Do the speed test and let us know the results.

when I loaded vista I had the same problem. Well actually the whole computer was dog slow, not just the internet. Found out it was an old ethernet card I had that was not compatible with vista. Soon as I disabled it everything was running fast and smooth.

yeah I have same problem at my parent's place. He just bought two new computers and they have vista on it. supposedly the computers are far capable of handling vista, but for some reason , internet's extremely slow. So, I installed firefox on it, and I think that helps a bit.

You should probably turn windows firewall back on, unless you notice your internet is slowing down because of it.
