I think this started after I applied a pretty big vista upgrade/patch, but I've been getting periodic bluescreens and I'm not sure how to diagnose them... does anybody know what this could be or where a good place to go to get this figured out? Much appreciated

if you think it happen after a MS patch, I suggest you go to All Programs->Accessories->System Tools-> System Restore. Choose a date that you know didnt have the bsod.

You can uninstall patches in programs and features. Click view installed updates.

My research says a 0x000000d1 error is driver not less or equal which is usually a memory problem

Run memtest86 or type in "memory" into the Vista instant search and choose to run Windows memory diagnostic the next time you reboot.

If I remember correctly I used to occasionally get D1 errors with Vista and I believe it was probably related to crappy drivers.


Also type in "problems reports and solutions" into Vista and you'll see the app than can send your reported problems for diagnosis and if there's a fix like updated rivers that address this problem they'll let you know how to fix it. Or if you're tech savvy enough you can download windbg and analyze you're own crash report, if you want.

Is the blue screen staying on the screen so you can read it or does it flash and reboot your computer? If its flashing and rebooting, right click my computer > properties > advanced > settings (under startup and recovery) > uncheck "automatically restart".

This will make the bsod stay on the screen and it may tell you exactly what file is causing the error.

I have Vista and only have gotten it once... which was a couple weeks ago. I restarted and haven't gotten it since.

There's really not a whole lot of things that cause BSOD anymore because everything is so abstracted. Video drivers are probably the biggest culprit. If you installed a recent patch or service pack, MS may have changed some DLLs that your video/sound/usb/motherboard drivers depend on.

I'd suggest (re)installing the latest version of driver for your video/sound/usb/motherboard.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've been suspecting a driver of some sort. I did try to reinstall the video drivers. May need to hunt around for other drivers. I'll see if I can jot down the BS error message next time it happens.

yo lee! also if you've got vmware running, it can cause this error. what was the last thing you were doing, or installed when this first happened?

No vmware. I installed a big bundle of Vista patches and fixes. I may need to do a restore.
