My brother has been very happy with Acronis True Image. He's used it to do a recovery a couple of times.

If you are handy with scripts and only want to backup your data robocopy is pretty cool. Used to be part of the resource kit but looks like it comes with Vista now http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robocopy

I just use robocopy to backup my important files.

and the stuff I really care about I use a script to compress and encrypt it and then upload it to my web server.

I've only used the Vista backup once and it worked flawlessly for me. I believe it's an image based backup so it saved an image of my c drive to d drive and when I needed to I booted to the Vista restore disc and chose the saved image and restored from that. Other than that I use WHS for all my PC.

Did you have a bad experience with using Vista's backup program or are you just saying it isn't as full featured a TM?

Nothing to do with Time Machine....Vista backup has two components, a backup that is not full features and basically backs up by type of file and thats it...The other is an "image" based backup. But there is no way to exclude directories, filetypes, etc.
