Video capture/editing software

Guys.

I need some video editing/capture software - preferably something free. It should be able to download from my Sony mini-DV camcorder and then do whatever I need to do with it. Does something like this exist? I got some crappy software from Sony but its useless.

If you have something, please PM me or provide a link.

Thanks!

Probably. I think Adobe has a good one. Let me find one.

Edit: Adobe Premiere. It is pretty good.

You're stuck paying for Adobe unless Windows Movie Maker has suddenly gotten better (which I doubt)

Adobe has a trimmed down version of Premiere called Premiere Elements. You should be able to get it for under $90. There's also a bundle available with Photoshop Elements that should be able to be had for less than $150.

zdnet.com has a bunch of shareware... but most of it has a time limit... like 30 days... then they ask you to upgrade etc... That might be a quick solution if you are desprate to edit something and then just quit using the software... but if you are going into the editing business... its better to just buy the software you need...

You get what you pay for...

Windows Movie Maker is okay but it isn't stable. I had it crash on me quite a few times while creating different things.

Windows Movie Maker is just so-so....can't say it's really powerful, but if you want to put something quick together, it will probably do it's job. I haven't had any problems with it yet...

I've used WMM for a while now and I like it. I have a Sony DV cam and it works just fine. I also use WinDV for downloading and making DVD's.

It comes free with XP.

The only problems I've had with WMM is with larger files. Think 50-100MB+. When browsing and importing different files it has crashed on me. It's great to link 3 quick clips together though. Very easy to use. Just unstable and shallow.

You may need more ram, or processor. Ive imported and combined over 1gb of video and never had a issue
