the BREW ADS server that you connect to for ringer, game, and app downloads in seperate from the WAP server that you connect to for web browsing. the commercial BREW ADS server will always charge your account, because developers get their cut off of every download. it is very tightly managed for this reason. some people think this is verizon being cheap skates. i don't think it is unfair. i'm not going to comment on any test ADS servers that might exist, other than to say the content would never be what you are looking for. (i can just imagine people now sniffing all of the known verizon IP pools looking for something that they will never find)

Anyone know if using that IP posted in my earlier post is totally free (no loss of minutes and no monthly browser charge). I have been using this special setup for a day now and it seems like minutes are being posted on my offpeak minutes instead of weekend minutes, but I didnt think any minutes would be used for this "free" service.

Hmm, I wonder why he said it didnt use any of his minutes....anyway, Im guessing there is no monthly charge for it though, and my other question was...what is the difference between off peak minutes and weekend minutes, all my minutes I used today seemed to be recorded as "off peak minutes"

anytime your phone connects to anything its using your minutes
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN IP THAT DOESNT.

the IP is simply a different gateway other than verizons'.

this free WAP thing is old news. its been around for quite a while now. granted the $6.99 Verizon WAP is great since it organizes your WAP sites, but for free this is just OK... nothing special.

it all comes down to... u get what u pay for...

the free EN is MUCH MORE of an advantage than free WAP, try it and you'll see....

Im still confused, what does the express network do again, and if it only uses minutes, ill go ahead and do it. Also using the "free" WAP access where can I check to see how many minutes I used on it? I would like to use it every day for stock quotes, but I dont know how many minutes I use each time. The T720 seems like a nice phone considering my only other phone was a POS kyocera 2035, but it seems like the I cant get any free games or ringtones on the motorola. Any other cool things I can do with the T720?

The Express Network is simply Verizon Wireless acting as your internet service provider (ISP). There are two distinct advantages of it:

1. It is wireless. If you can make a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network from the place you are standing or road you are driving or plane you are flying, you can make this connection and surf the internet.

2. It is high speed. The 3G1X-RTT implementation used by Verizon Wireless today allows you to burst up to 144 Kbps. Legally they claim that as the max throughput, but the average throughput is 40-60 Kbps. I have yet to see a test where a 56 Kbps modem is anywhere near as fast.

Apparently this promotion allows you to connect to the Express Network if you need it, and it just counts against your anytime minutes. There are other price plans that have been around for a year and a half now, which include per megabyte or unlimited.

I don't have much info on the "free" WAP sites, and I doubt you could call and ask. It is difficult (and rightly so) to get free games and ringers on any phone. If you just want stock quotes, there are easier ways to do it. I have "text alerts" sent to me at pre-defined times, so I don't even have to do anything. I get the weather sent to me every morning, and certain stocks sent to me every hour during the day. Check out www.vtext.com for more information.

Let me know if I need to clarify this for you.

Ok,

So basically whats the difference between me logging into just that "Free" IP that only goes against my minutes, where I can log into yahoo and check weather and everything....and the Express Network. Isnt this WAP thing I set up wireless and its seems pretty fast as well. At www.vtext.com do I have to pay for stock quotes sent at certain times and such? I just dont see the difference between the express network and the lil WAP thingy that is "old news". Thanks for the help so far though!

Right now, WAP connects at a MAX of 9.6Kbps. EN connects at a much higher speed. 9.6Kbps isn't even as fast as a damn fax machine, which is why its only a TEXT BASED mini-browser.
You can't use EN to surf right on your phone, u use your phone as a "modem" for your laptop or PDA.
If you just wanna check your quotes or weather, do it via text alert like Fotis suggests above.
Using WAP u can't download free games or ringtones, you can only browse WAP sites.

Yes, EN is available on the Samsung A530. I believe all newer handsets are EN ready.

WAP is a term that describes using your cell phone to browse websites. Currently WAP and BREW (Get it Now) utilize a 2G connection. The maximum throughput is 14.4 Kbps without compression.

Express Network is not used on your phone itself. It uses the phone as a modem, but you must connect it to your laptop. The Express Network utilizes a 3G connection. The maximum throughput is 144 Kbps.

In the next few months Verizon will be allowing people to use a 3G connection for WAP and BREW (Get it Now). You will notice a major improvement in speed.

All phones that Verizon sells are 3G, meaning they are capable of using the Express Network.

A salesmen or that website can fill you in on the cost of the text alerts. I have no idea since I never see a bill.

now u have free MobileWeb w/o paying $6.99 per month and it just comes away from your minutes.

Express Network is Verizon's highspeed data protocol
Anyone know how I can change the IP address on my VX6000? I can't seem to find it in the manual.

Your IP is dynamic, it's issued everytime you sign on for data.

It still works.
I just hooked mine up the other week and it works great.
When I was down in North Carolina for 5-days I was able to connect my laptop with my cell phone and surf using only my minutes.
On your cellular bill it shows up as dialing the number 000-000-0000 with the appropriate connection minutes deducted.

It’s great for people like me who don’t really need a dedicated account for travel.
If you’re not at a place that has a data port available, just the ability to connect and check E-Mail and stuff while on vacation is nice.

Don't let that fool you. Your PC is telling you the negotiated baud rate between your PC and the modem in the handset (MSM). The baud rate of your PPP connection over the traffic channel varies.

Do you "connect at" any specific speed on DSL or cable? No. Your DSL or cable connection speed is determined by the hops and bandwidth available between point A and point B (and overhead, acknowledgements, packet resends, etc, blah, blah, blah). Same thing on Verizon's EN, or Sprint's Vision connections. It's a packet data connection, just like cable and DSL.

The QNC connections through a CDMA carrier is circuit switched @ 14.4kbps based on the IS-95 standard of CDMA

this is not QNC... this is ExpressNetwork (1x)... now called NationalAccess...

btw... just so you know... i have recently learned that VZW is doing a billing system-wide audit and terminating the certain feature code that has been allowing users to use their included minutes with NA. this was a feature that had been mistakenly added to customer's accounts in a billing loophole. this is a feature that otherwise costs $79 per month for unlimited usage... don't get caught.... big no no

i know i'm the one who started the thread way back when... but now i'm in bed with them...

btw... EV-DO kicks off this summer.... broadband speeds baby...

Sprint has the same....it's PCS Vision and it's higher speed, >100kbps, but not broadbank like EV-DO. The Sprint phone is capable of the cable hookup but that also a big no no for now at least. Get caught, get a warning. Second time, could shut it off.

I'm unaware of my having any feature code. I just plugged the data cable into my VX6000 and dialed #777. Will I still be able to do this after this 'billing-audit'?
