Verizon stock

What do you guys think? Sell or hold on to it? About 1200 shares (My dad's). He should have sold it a few years ago when it was around 54/share.

verizon communications is a publicly traded company
verizon wireless is a privately help company owned 55% by verizon communications and 45% by vodafone

vodafone has put down an offer to aquire at&t wireless. if the offer is accepted, vodafone would have to sell its minority interest in verizon wireless to verizon communications for $20Bil to finance the deal. one can assume the aquisition would not be approved is vodafona maintains an interest in verizon wireless while attempting to aquire at&t wireless.

if vodafone sells its shares, it may make verizon communication shares go up...

As it is they are operating on a system that is used only here. Vodaphone gives them a little bit of leverage. But, it is hard to convince companies to make phones for only one specific market when the rest of world is using something else. Vodaphone buys AT &T and that makes AT&T a bigger player. Also, Verizon has having all kinds of internal problems. Also if Cingular buys AT&T, that will be the biggest cellphone provider in the US, NOT Verizon. It doesn't look good.
Remember, it is not always the best technology that wins...it is the one that everybody excepts.

I think you should get a little bit better picture of the entire cellular industry before you validate that comment. Saying that the entire rest of the world is in one place and the US is in another place simply isn't true anymore. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, not GSM, and CDMA is all over the world including China and India. That's all you have to be to be big....China and India and the US. Who cares if there are 24 tiny European countries and 55 African nations using GSM. Collectively around the world, GSM still reigns but CDMA is popping up in Australia/NZ, central and South America, Mexico, Canada, and the Far East. You should also know that the US version of GSM is different that the rest of the world's GSM, too.

In the long run, it doesn't matter. These networks are not here to stay forever. In just a few short years (<10), the migration path will put both of these technologies (GSM and CDMA) so close together..... In the long run, the best technology will win. Analog and TDMA were bigger, but they are losers.

In the meantime, know that bigger is not always better. Just because you have the most customers doesn't mean you'll be able to drive the market pricing, the feature set and the handset space. There's way too many cellular carriers and private label services...

Nobody is worried about Cingular + ATT (as one big GSM carrier) except for maybe Justice....probably not even them. Oh and T-Mobile.

TDMA in India is tiny. And when I say tiny i mean tiny. For all practical purposes it does not exist, except in a couple of metro's. It was supposed to be the poor man's way to get a cell phone but it has, for the most part, flopped. The only reason it is even still here is because the company is owned by the government. I can't speak about China.

and Verizon Wireless is going to low-ball them a price, which would mean Vodafone is going to snap back and threaten to buy out Verizon Communications in a hostile takeover instead.

this is going to get interesting....
