Verizon FiOS > *
To resolve this, I followed the instructions for making the VZ router a bridge and putting my Linksys behind it as the router (http://text.broadbandreports.com/for...ing-with-REV-D). This took me a few days to accomplish fully because after the initial configuration, my VOD and Widgets wouldn't work. Turns out that the PPPOE interface was not disabled and when it failed to get an IP, it would disable the Coax Ethernet interface, disconnecting my STB's. I could ping the STB's for a couple of moinutes, then they would drop off.
So once again, my STB's are getting IPs from my windows server and my P2P sessions are stable.
In response, yes, the set top boxes do ethernet over Coax, but everything else is CAT5. The actiontech router has ethernet interfaces for both ports.
Got your PM. You may want to consider the bridging setup if you're going to be doing inbound connections.
So the FiOS guy is here now
but I got one quick question. He wants to put the converter box -that converts the fiber in to coax before it goes into the home- right next to the washer and dryer. I said wouldn't that put a lot of electrical noise into the signal, cause he actually wants to power this converter box from the same outlet that the washer and dryer are plugged into. So if he does this will this put out a dirty signal and contaminate my feed when the washer or dryer are on?

Washer/dryer are usually on their own circuit with only a two plug receptacle. How will he plug a third device in?
Installing an Alternate Router
Quite a while ago I asked some questions about installing an alternate router with FIOS so I wanted to give an update to it.
I recently purchased:
VPN Router
http://www.netgear.com/Products/VPNa...rs/FVS318.aspx
Wireless N Router:
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Rout.../WNDR3300.aspx
Bridge:
http://www.netgear.com/Products/APsW.../WNHDE111.aspx
Steps I followed:
1) login to the actiontec router admin panel and release the IP provided by Verizon
2) hook up my VPN router to the FIOS box.
3) done
It was that easy. lol
The hard part is going in an optimizing stuff on the router which I still need to do.
If we were subscribers of FIOS TV this wouldn't have worked because the router verizon provides has a Coax input for the tv which is what they typically use to run the internet as well, but in my situation i asked them to run cat5 into the house instead of the coax because I knew I'd be hooking up my own router. As great as bundles can be for better pricing and such, there are drawbacks to them and this is one of them.
Now only if Netgear made a Dual Band Wireless Router with VPN.
I still need to set up the bridge I bought in my bedroom where my other computer is located. hopefully it can catch a decent signal in there.

Usually the FiOS unit has a triplexer in it that muxes/demuxes the upstream and downstream Video (coax), internet (cat5), and phone (4-pair RJ wire) from the PON network right on the device. I haven't heard of a router that takes a coax input and then breaks out the video and data.

So I told him to run the cat5 instead since the Actiontec router accepts coax or cat5 and I wanted to keep my options open as far as hardware flexibility goes.
The separation of data from video over one line is new to me too.
My question now is what's the default username and password for this FiOS router so I can change it's settings. I get the WEP key on the side and was able to join the network but now I need to the username and password.
All the information should be documented in a little package they will give you. That package will have your wireless connection info (SSID, WEP Password, router login info, etc). It's this little folder with velcro holding it together.
I actually don't have the internet portion since I have a deal worked out with my ISP where I get free internet. It's not the fastest EVAR but it's tolerable. I'm trying that user name and those passwords and they aren't working!!
I'll look through the package but I spoke to the guy installing it and he said I don't have a reason to access the settings since i"m not using internet but I want to at least disable SSID broadcasting.

There's an article in today's LA Times regarding the govt forcing verzion to lower their bundle rates on tv, internet, and phone. I can't find the article on the LA Times website, but keep an eye out for lower bundle rates.

I recently had a glitch and the Internet went down. (Yeah, the whole Internet)
I had been disappointed because my custom configuration of bridging the Actiontech router eventually broke the Video on demand and interactive guide. This had been happening for quite some time and I kept putting off redoing the setup.
Well, when the internet went down, I just couldn't have the wife call Verizon because of the custom config, so I drove back home and returned it to the default configuration , then called. After a bunch of troubleshooting, we determined the router failed and they would send out a new one.
Maybe an hour later, the internet connection came alive again and I never called Verizon back, thinking I'd get a new router out the deal. And I did. It's the newest model, a Westell 9100. Initial reviews on broadbandreports.com say it doesn't suffer from the crippled NAT table like the Actiontech does. That means I don't have to bridge it and I might actually get the service as I feel it should be delivered.
I've got a torrent running now so if I can post this message, then things are much better than they used to be using the actiontech.

I have the FiOs bundle and for the most part like it except the guide for TV sucks compared to DirecTv's. There is a severe lack of information on it unless I'm just not setting it up properly.
I just got UTOPIA installed a few days ago. Its like FiOS without the large, evil corporation. 15mbps for $40.00 50mbps for $60.00
They have a TV option, which the in laws have and it sucks. I tired to switch to DirectTV, but their on demand BLOWS so the wife was not happy. Hate Comcast.
I digress, FTTH rules.

I'm having trouble with my FiOS DVR and I'm curious if anyone else is having the same problem.
Only some channels I'm occasionally having the sound drop out and video slow down. It's only on DVR playback (not live TV) and only on certain channels. Anyone heard of this or have this problem?
Google returns a dozen different answers and problems that are basically summarized with "Verizon sucks and they won't fix it".

Hmm. I'll give that a try. Several times recently I've unplugged 30 seconds and re-plugged.
It's definitely not related to my Denon receiver or TV or cables because it's only DVR playback and the problem exists when I playback on all 3 TVs in the house.
Thanks for the suggestion.

My wife complained when we got it (a month or so ago). I bet if I asked her about it now she wouldn't even know what the previous version looked like. Probably wouldn't even remember there was an update
This thread brings back memories. I used to work for 20/20 companies going door to door selling FIOS packages. Made a killing, $100+ for each sale and I won the Northeast knockstar award for 1 week. That doubled my commission and got my parents the Internet and phone package free for a year.
Then I lost my job, 20/20 companies got sued and I received a settlement
FIOS really was the shit back then, don't even know how it compares to anything else now. I couldn't get it in Charlotte and definitely not in Sunset Beach so I've never kept up on it.
