Treo 650 crashing problem

I was gonna post this in the 24 thread in Ramblings but thought it was too great a threadjack... just on the topic of Treo 650 crashes.

I started having some serious crashing problems.. it would just keep resetting, like maybe every 10 minutes. Even while I wasn't using it. I had to wipe everything away with a hard reset and reinstall, and now its working great. Even battery life has improved drastically - battery was lasting 2 days standby tops before - maybe 1 day with above-normal use - now it lasts as long as it did when I first got it - I left it charging last night and right now, 12 hours after taking it off the charger, its at 93% - some app I had installed was draining it very fast and something was causing the crashes too. I consider it the same as reinstalling OS on your computer...

just some information I thought might be useful - if your 650 is crashing like hell, reinstall everything. It's kind of a PITA to reinstall and set everything up again, but well worth it to avoid the crashing. And, try to be more careful with the installs - I installed a lot of crap that I really didn't need. Just did it more out of novelty. Not installing that stuff again - only the stuff I really need. I have 20mb free!! I had like 3-4mb before.

I have a treo 650 and it has never crashed on me and i have had it for about a year or so now. On the other hand though my cousin has one through cingular and that thing crashes every other minute . I believe he has updated the FW a few times as well but it hasnt helped the cause either.

Is this just an issue with the Sprint ones, or is it a problem with them all? I'm on Cingular and am debating about getting one in addition to my normal phone.

Have to say it: Treos SUCK.

srika: One of the curses of my job is supporting the armada of Treos for my company. If the Treo keeps resetting on you (which was apt to happen alot for the 600s), the only cure was to essentially get it replaced. Your issue is hardware-related...this has no bearing with the GPRS or connection.

Well last week I suredly zoned in on what was causing my crashes. After reinstalling everything from scratch some weeks ago (hard reset), I left certain programs off. Last week, after some weeks of decidedly smooth and enjoyable sailing in Treo-land, I decided to install Verichat. That same day the crashes started again. I uninstalled it so fast... well, it was just damn fast. The culprit was Verichat.

srika - in line for the Treo 700p

Treo 650's have a known issue of (potential) crashes. I haven't seen it to be carrier-specific. It's something with the hardware. I have been lucky - aside from this specific software-related crashing issue - to have a relatively non-problematic 650.

This is the best mobile device I've ever owned. I got my first cell 10 years ago.

my advice to you if you really want to get a Treo: wait for the 700p.

Damn. I don't know what to do in this case. I am going to need a proper smart phone for work in the next month or so, and don't want a crackberry. Palm better get their shit straight. Either that or Nokia (who I adore and have had my last 6 phones from) needs to get to work.

To find out why your Treo crashed, just enter #*#377 on your dialer, and it should bring up your last crash info from the System Error log.

Most crashes are usually caused by applications not working properly with the OS (outdated files, incompatible OS, etc...). I've never had mine crash in a while. It did because I used a OS4 application. The Treo didn't like it a lot. As long as I use the latest and greatest, it should work.

btw in case you haven't seen it.... Palm released a new 1.13 udpate a few weeks ago... for Sprint at least. Don't think this will help me though...

http://www.palm.com/us/support/downl...er/sprint.html

New with version 1.13:

* Integrates the Treo 650 E911 Updater to improve the ability of emergency response personnel to locate users who dial 911 from the Treo 650 smartphone
* Improves memory handling when using background applications such as GoodLink
