Corroborated via phone conversation with an AT&T CSR. Main points from the conversation:

1. AT&T Wireless will be gone as of Monday, i.e. Sunday night all the stores will be changing their signage ~ 11pm

2. All customers will have the option of switching to a Cingular plan. Doing so will require new Cingular equipment, to take advantage of "network features". When pressed, the rep advised that all equipment from 11/15 onwards would take advantage of 64K SIM cards rather than the older 32K SIM cards. The equipment list will consist only of handsets that accept 64K SIMs.

3. There will be steep, *very* steep discounts on handsets to help push ATTWS customers to switch. These discounts *cannot* be stacked with your annual equipment upgrade credit.

75 and 150 dollar phone trade in rebates. also regular mail in rebates.
not to mention regular discounted cost on equipment when signing a new contract for attws customers.

we dont have to get a new phone(until the contract is up)...but any phones that cingular doesnt carry..there will be no support for except through the manufacturer....once our contract is up..we also have to sign over(i believe from what i read) to cingular to get there 64k SIM....and if the phone isnt unlocked...in my case..mine isnt....you will have to get a cingular phone to support it..but in any situation..by the time my contract is up....it will be time for a new phone anyways

i could be totally wrong..this is from what ive read or been informed about....someone will correct me if this isnt true

you are not going to be forced to buy a new phone,

you are allowed to keep your att phone and plan if you like

if you just bought an att phone such as the smt5600 and you want it, you can either,
1) stay with att
2) cing will give you a discount towards another phone after monday. even if you just bought one. i do not know if you can use the 64mb sim from cing to use in the smt5600. i never know until i try.
3) you can return the att phone w/in the 30 day period and buy a new cing phone but will have to switch to a new cing plan

but cing will make it worth your while to switch and plus the MEdia plans are so much better than att's

I cannot believe this is the last day.

There is no way I will give up my ATTWS plan. $39.99 GSM America, with 1000 anytime minutes, unlimited m2m, LD and NW.

On the other hand, I may take a look at Cingular's data plans. I have an unlimited data plan and EDGE PC card that I use in my laptop.

Oddly enough, from what I understand, people can still walk into a blue store today and switch to ATTWS. Funny.

Well - interesting update for me. I went to what cingularwireless.com showed as an Cingular store near me. Turns out to be an AT&T store. So I get there an no transformation of signs, etc.

So I start taking with the guy. It seems that some AT&T WS parts of NC (including Raleigh) were sold to Suncom !! Not sure what to make of this or what it means to me as an IBM corporate customer of AT&T, but I think if I do nothing my Blackberry phone and data service will get converted to a Suncom account.

Anyone know if this is something that allows me to walk away early from my 1 year contract commitment and go with Cingular anyway?
