Spotify Thread

It's here. www.spotify.com Anyone sign up yet or are you waiting for the free beta like me. Can someone clarify regarding the free beta, can you use your phone?

Cliffs: Spotify is a music service from Europe that just opened today. Stream 15 million songs to your computer, mobile device, tablet. Prices range from free, $5, $10 a month. Might be good for those that want access to a huge variety of music and want to pick an exact song.

Signed up a couple weeks ago, nothing yet.

For your phone you'll have to pay $10/mo.

Agreed. But with my wife killing our hard drive this might be easier for me to listen to more music.

I loved Grooveshark but they were missing some key artists and for me personally I have to jailbreak my phone again and pay a monthly for their mobile version.

So I went on twitter and searched #Spotify to see if anyone was giving out codes. Someone retweeted that Demi Moore had codes. So I went to her account, saw her post with a link, put in my email, 5 mins later got an invite. Trent Reznor was doing this as well.

I have a Zune Pass and while it doesn't give me mobile access on iOS devices (Windows Phone and Zune devices only) it's got everything else spotify does and I can stream from my 360 plus I get to keep 10 songs a month.

But I still want to check out spotify, I heard the hype for years.

Hadn't got my invite from Spotify, but I saw that Coca Cola was handing out invites. Signed up there and within five minutes had it.

Very interesting. Might have to try out Premium for a month to check out mobile.

Spotify is pretty damn awesome btw. Does anyone know how many hours the free version lets you listen to music for??

I think this just became my primary music source

I have apps on my Android phone (that were FREE), and lets me get free music, is this basically the same? And I've been meaning to ask... how are those apps legal??

i have one too. What those do is just search torrents or some other file sharing thing and lets you dl it straight??

SPotify is not free for mobile. You can get it on the desktop for free. You can search a lot of musicc and just put it on a playlist and listen to those, you can also play local files from the program.

In spotify you technically arent downloading the music, I think? You're just streaming it. Its more in common with pandora except you choose the music.

It scans your local hdd and throws those in the Local tab. If you have iTunes or windows media it will make tabs for those as well matching whatever music you put in those programs. Since I share laptops with my wife we don't autosync iTunes and manually add music.

Now if you use the search, you can search music you don't have. Type in just Muse and a ton of songs result. If you click the album column head then you have it nicely organized by album. Or at the top right corner all the albums are reflected.

If you've created playlists it reflects each respective playlist you've created.

As for mobile use you should download your phone's app. There is an iOS app that's already had one update. It allows you to wirelessly download music you own to your phone. Sadly these songs won't show in iPod mode. However with a free account you can wifi sync to Spotify and listen to whatever is in the Spotify library. I'm actually surprised I found Beatles and U2. I don't think grooveshark has Beatles.

I got an email last week from Trent about this, he sent it out to his original email list from the 90's. I guess it pays to keep old email addresses

Interesting. I wirelessly transferred some songs to my iPhone but when it plays the song the first 20 seconds are the actual song and the rest of the song is a song I did not transfer over that I also own. Still buggy I guess

Ok, so I like you can play any song you want on your PC. So, if I pay, I can play it on my iphone as well?

I think that's the case. But even with the free version you can do wireless sync. Nice little bonus ahead of iOS5.

Yeah on the iPhone app there's a artist/album search. If I do the search on my free license and search an album where I have one song, then that song is in bold while the others are greyed out. I can see the potential selection but I can't use them. Just like cochese said, wireless sync but might be buggy per my situation above.

Also unless someone wants to point out what I'm doing wrong, you can only listen to songs on playlists you've synced. Wanted to listen to a song I knew I had on my computer, but couldn't because it wasn't in the playlist I synced.

I got an invite. It's OK. Using it primarily at work. One item I noticed was the music would skip on me every once and a while. Not a bandwidth issue here at work. Maybe just a beta glitch.

On your phone yeah. You'd have to manually sync your library into your phone but goodbye disk space.
